really slow internet

For the last few days, my internet service (comcast) has been really slow. Firefox is taking forever to load pages and is randomly timing out, sometimes coming back and sometimes I have to restart the browser.

It's doing this on downloads (from any site) as well.

I updated and ran avg, no viruses. I updated and ran spybot, no spyware. ad-aware never comes up with more than three problems, so I don't think that will help much.

I'm using wireless internet, 54mbps with a Linksys router (already established as crappy product) hooked into a cable modem. Windows XP

Yank the wireless bit out of the system and see if the speeds improve. Could be somebody else is using your wireless for free, sucking up your bandwidth. Could also be spyware/malware on your computer sending out lots and lots of traffic. Could also be a problem with Comcast. If you have another computer that you can test with, that would help narrow down the possibilities as well.

That shit was just happening yesterday. Try power cycling your modems and routers. Just unplug them for 30 seconds or more and plug em back in. It works a lot for me :shrug:

tried all that before

I looked over my firewall and it seems all the settings had been cleared (I guess this happened when my laptop didn't shut down but stayed in a turning on/off cycle all last nite without me knowing it until this morning)

but I changed the settings back and it seems to be running fine now
