Really tired of chopping straw

My attitude in the past was that there's no way I'm paying for straw. I bought a bale for 5 dollars, and still have some of it left.
But I'm tired as hell of chopping that crap up! I've been using a paper cutter, but it's not that much faster than scissors. So, I'm either going to buy straw, or buy a shredder.
I looked at the tennstud website, and they sell 10 lbs. for 25 dollars. I'm curious how much a bale of straw weighs, that way I could have a good idea of how much 10 lbs is.
I would also be intrested in knowing how cheap I could get a straw shredder, OR, what type of business would have a straw shredder available for me to use.
All I know is that I ain't chopping no more straw;)

You can get an electric weed eater for thirty bucks that will chop a whole bale of straw in about ten minutes. RR

Lowes, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, etc. The cheap ones do just fine. You can even put the straw into a tote, and put the lid on with a hole for the weed eater to slip through so you don't make a mess. I chop straw in the living room, and my wife hasn't even divorced me yet. RR

LoL RR, you must have a really nice setup to chop straw in the living room without guaranteeing divorce, or a VERY forgiving wife!

Ok, I have a weed eater, I just assumed it would be a messy affair with so so results. I guess I'll plan on doing something like that over Easter, do a whole bale so I don't have to worry about it for a while.

Looks like I'm good.

If you're going to use a bag over the top of a trash can to hold the dust down, it helps to have a second person to manipulate the bag that you wrap around the weed eater shaft. Get creative. Don't dump the whole bale in at once. Do a small section at a time. RR

If you have a riding mower that mulches & bags. On a dry day, mow lawn short first. Spread bale out in thin rows. In LOW/SLOW gear, mulch & bag.

Thanks Roger, that did the trick. I managed to shread about 1/2 a bale of hay in around 20 minutes. I can't believe I spent the last year cutting the stuff up with a paper cutter.

I hope you meant to say 'straw'. Don't use hay. It has lots of grains in it that will lead to contamination. RR

Yea, I ment straw. I use the term out of ignorance. I don't think I've ever seen a bale of hay. I will try to watch that.

If you have a chain binder. Take a wrap around the end of the bale. To hold it tightly together. Then use trimmer like a chain saw to cut the bale end off. Move chain binder back a few inch's & repeat. It's work.

Thanks Agar
Didn't think a bale would be tied up tight enough to just hack away at it.

If you have a mulching bagging lawn mower. Spread out a trail of straw & follow trail with the mower.
