Drug blunder cost millions April 3, 2007 - Herald Sun
THE chief cook of an ecstasy cartel cost the gang millions of dollars by not properly reading recipe instructions and mistakenly throwing out base oil as waste product, according to police.
Police believe Michael Kingston Thomas -- cook for the Deals on Wheels gang -- could have dumped millions of dollars worth of MDMA oil thinking it was waste product.
Investigators believe Thomas would have then tried to turn waste product into MDMA powder.
The manufacturing disaster happened while gang boss Laurence Wayne Allen took a trip to central Australia.
During a seven-month investigation detectives also learned that:
GANG members had trouble finding hidden drug drop-offs in state forest areas.
FOREST rangers had to rescue bogged gang members looking for hidden drugs.
ONE gang member had more than 20 phone conversations despite being classed as a deaf person.
ONE gang member forgot a PIN allowing access to a locker containing boxes of stashed cash.
The Laurie Allen ecstasy gang made about $4 million worth of MDMA powder in just seven months before police swooped in November 2003.
That much powder would have yielded about 118,750 ecstasy pills.
The gang's first clandestine lab, at a factory in Alphington, caught fire during one of Thomas's cooks.
The fire tipped off police who then watched and listened as the gang moved their operation to a Campbellfield factory, where they produced more than 12kg of 80 per cent pure ecstasy powder.
The Campbellfield lab was the biggest ecstasy lab busted in Victoria at the time. Key members pleaded guilty and were sentenced last month.

Wow... are all australian gangs this pathetic? Not that I'm a fan of gangs in other regions, this just sounds like a sitcom.

Wow, I have to think that's one of the worst examples of organized crime ever. Most gangs kill people for the kind of fuck ups these guys made, but from the sound of it they would've had to kill the entire gang as well as their customers

An interesting tactic. Here, in the US, the govt. and media do a pretty good job of making the population scared to leave their homes with the threat of gangs.
Seems like the tactic in aus is to get the school children believing gangs are just too retarded to join.

Sounds pretty pathetic too me. Australian media doesn't usually harp on "gangs" so to speak. If they are to blame anyone it is either bikie gangs, or the "criminal underworld" as they like to call it.
The media is notorious when it comes to pointing the finger at certain underworld figures and relating nearly every bust to them in some way....
