you should be able to tell when the humidity is that low just by looking at it.

They're $10 to $20 at cigar shops. Get an analog one, not digital. Wrap it in a damp towel for an hour, then unwrap and adjust the calibration screw on the back so the dial reads 99%. Repeat weekly. RR

Most, the one by me only carrys digitals.
Good thing there's about 50 of them in this town.
I've noticed the better selection of cigars in the shop, the better selection of humidification accessories.

my hermit crabs would kill me if i used one of those. poor animals, i feel sorry for any animal living off of the humidity based from that. Those are expensive for what you get too.

i have no idea if there's any "sales description act" type legislation in the USA. i live in the UK where there is. i would be within my rights (as far as i know) to demand a refund, if the product didn't operate within it's stated range.
found this site: for any interested UK/euro dwellers.

though,i wouldn't pay double the unit cost for p+p personally...

In the US if it is a certified measuring device it comes with some sticker etc that it is certified by the US Department of standards and measures or something of the such. This is usually only reserved for scientific instruments, the only time you really see it is at gas pumps where they have to be checked every so often and recertified as accurate. In America you are unfortunately allowed to sell crap to the consumer...
On another note, what method are you using to get your RH up?

I'm using perlite... i went to the cigar shop about an hour ago, i just bought 2 anolog hygrometers and thier newest and most expensive digital hygrometer/thermometer... im taking RR's advice and letting my anolog ones sit in a damp towel for an hour... and my digital one reads 85%rh and rising.... that calmed me down a bit...

You don't need a humidity reader for a perlite humidified tub. If you're using perlite then you're going to have the right humidity range as long as you hydrate the perlite correctly.

fs: "In America you are unfortunately allowed to sell crap to the consumer..."
let the buyer beware eh... were trying to get away from the snake-oil salesman mo in europe TF.
"On another note, what method are you using to get your RH up? "
mostly just the perlite and occasional misting method. though my first attempt was perlite in a heated plant incubator. turned on occasionally throughout the day, which in fact, maybe coincidentally, gave me my best fruits yet.
using the multiple hole Ala rr's fae tek in one fc recently, which is doing ok so far.
