Try soaking the entire thing in alcohol over night. Cover it at least to the top of the joint. That should dissolve all the resin in there. Wiggle the joint occasionally.

There SHOULD be a rubber seal around the stem, between the stem and the bong wall. If not, then the glass may have jammed together, and that shit can stick really tight when jammed.
It's a pain in the ass sometimes to get the stem back in with the rubber piece on it, so your friend (or someone) probably didn't know any better and just jammed it in...
At least that how my JBDs work.

Glass on glass bongs don't use rubber, because they're glass on glass

we had it upside down soaking in 71% isopropyl but nothing, should we go for it again using 91% or what, i was thinking of boiling water, the bong weighs like 5 pounds its a heavy piece so i think it can take it

This has happened to me before. I get the edge of a wooden knife handle and tap the downstem with it. This has always worked although I would be careful.

Twist that sucker and slowly tug on it little by little. Probably would be easier if you poured hot water on it or got it warm before you tried it so the resin will loosen up. I can't imagine it being that hard though.
edit- That is if the down stem is fully intact, you should have something to grip onto unless the stem is broken inside, in which case I have no clue. Thinking about it more I guess that's what you meant. Still, getting it warm is a good start.

PS, cool the glass and it'll make it contract. Warm it and it'll probably stick more. Ever take a nice big rip off a GoG and get the bowl all nice and hot? It gets stuck in there good then.

I was able to get my downstem unstuck (which was stuck to the base for over a year) with ease, and I'll tell you how. First of all this happened because there was water between the two glass tubes, not because of resin. When there is water between glass, it acts as a glue. Water has higher adhesive forces (between water and glass) than cohesive forces (between water molecules) which causes capillary action and creates that meniscus in test tubes. In the bong, water between the downstem and the base pulls both pieces closer together and with great force. Thats why it gets stuck.
To remove fused glass, here is what you should do:
1) crush ice and fill the bong with it (a third of the way up the shaft) 2) fill the downstem with ice as well (not too tightly packed but not really lose either) 3) now place the bong in a pot of really hot water and keep it there for about 1 or 2 minutes 4) while holding the bong in hot water, gently tap the downstem with another piece of glass (any glass item works. Wine glass is a bad idea because its really thin and might break) 5) after about 2 to 3 minutes, shake and twist the downstem. It should come off easily.
The mechanism behind this is like so: the ice on the inside is in contact with the downstem and the cold temperature makes it contract. The hot water on the outside expands the glass base. This creates space between the two glass pieces, making it ridiculously easy to separate them.
Hope this helped. Enjoy

This guy's suggestion sounds good but you could also try a stronger isopropyl. Try and find 99%.
Have you tried heating up the stem and pulling it out with a cloth over your hand?

Try to use something with decent viscosity! Perhaps some olive oil? You could also try to chill only the stem, and not the bong around it (if possible) to contract the stuck piece.

i tried acetone, freezing, and heating, just wanted to say thanks, bshake44, your method finally worked for me. although i didn't have to fill the base with ice, just some crushed ice down the stem was enough this time.
