Creating a stronger immune system
    #6745878 - 04/04/07 11:09 AM (17 years, 1 month ago)

Would it be possible to strengthen the mycelium's resistance to particular contaminants by feeding the organism a deactivated form of it? In other words lets say you had a particular mold which contaminated a culture. Could you take a portion of that and mix it in with agar, sterilize it, grow mycelium on it, and then over successive generations of doing this create a resistance to the mold?

The adaptive immune system only exists in vertebrates (to my knowledge).

Molds contaminate substrates.

Stamets' book "Mycelium Running" touches on this a bit. Something about outdoor mycelium exposed to soil flora becomes stronger than sterile grown mycelium that can initially do poorly when exposed to contaminates. Worth a look.

so I have an outdoor project which is trich contaminated (temps to cold), if when the temps becomes warmer the mycelium win the battle to the trich and gets to fruit, would it be posible that a clone of this makes a more trichoderma resistent mycelium?

It is my understanding that unless the mycelium is constantly exposed to contaminates it loses its ability to fight them off. In the cushy environment of sterile substrates it becomes fat and lazy and easily killed.

Correct. Mycelium in nature doesn't really fare that much better, although it is generally stronger. That's why they wait their turn for the substrate. Still, it's the substrate that the mold contamants or mushroom mycelium grows on.

I've got a couple of oyster strains that will run right over bacteria on a petri dish though, and eat it for lunch.

What made me think of this is how people get weaker immune systems from overuse of sanitizers. So RR if I understand you correctly you are saying that it has some effect but not a whole lot?
