If your substrate depth is 4 inches im sure the casing layer wont make a difference..

Substrate moisture content determines fruit size. The casing layer simply helps to keep the substrate hydrated. You can pour water around the edges of the substrate, and then pour the excess out the next day. That should hydrate it for the flush. You can also use a syringe to inject water right into the center of the substrate.

i only sprinkle enough verm to cover 50% of my substrate and i get some big mushrooms sometimes...

Is a good idea to dunk a poo substrate before the first flush to recover in someway the water evaporated through out the incubation?
