Slow spawing with coir?
    #6742618 - 04/03/07 02:56 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So I tried spawning my BRF cakes to coir. I crumbled the cakes, and would mix a 1/2 jar full of coir for each 1/2 cake (a 1:1 ratio). I hydrated the coir with boiling water, and waited several hours before adding the crumbled cakes. It would not drip if I held a handful of it, but it would let out a lot of water if i squeezed it, almost squirting out (is that too much water?)
To crumble the cakes, I put them in a plastic bag and just crushed them and broke them apart by hand. I tried dunking 5 of them, and did the other 3 without dunking.

It's been 7 days since putting the first 3 crumbled cakes in the coir, and I have no growth at all on that one. No contams or anything, but none of the BRF chunks seem to have grown/spawned to the coir at all.

Any idea what's wrong here?

Since I was only doing 8 jars, I didn't see the sense in using the whole brick, so I just broke off some smaller pieces and hydrated those.

8 1/2 pint jars is enough for a whole brick

If nothing has happened in 7 days you have a problem, it should have finished colonizng by now, specialy coir.

Your problem was:

When you grab a handful you want to squeeze and only have a few tiny drops of water come out....

sorry, looks like your going to have to try again. Live and learn eh?

I couldn't find enough information on what ratio to use, so I just played it safe and did 1:1. Since it's primarily for personal use, I'd prefer speed over a higher yield.

a coir brick goes for 5 dolla wich is an near insignificant amount of money for what u will get so why didnt u just go with the sure fire 1 gallon of water to 1 brick, then what ever u didnt need just throw away.

I dont think you can dehydrate it if you already added your spawn to it, I would say it's too late...

Remember next time though, you want to be able to squeeze your substrate and only have a few tiny drops of water come out.

I tried squeezing the water out of one of them (I have 3 small tupperware containers), and I'll try sifting out the coir with these next two with some 1/4" mesh screen. Might as well try...

Well, the sifting seemed to go alright, I'm left with the decent-sized chunks of the BRF cakes.
I'll try spraying the crumbled cakes with H2O2, and covering it in new, less moist coir.

I should have mentioned that only 3 of the crumbled cakes were in coir for 7 days.

The other 5 (2 in one container, 3 in another) were only in for probably 20 hours, and after sifting out the coir and letting them sit for 2 days to hopefully re-establish themselves as king of the tupperware container. But what do you know? They are doing just fine, with a nice, white fuzz growing on the chunks and the bits of coir left in there (I did a good hour of research, and it's definately mycelium, not cobweb), and I just added new, dry coir today.

But the 3 cakes worth that were in for 7 days are indeed fucked. I'll put the remains out by the compost pile in my yard. Not that I expect much, especially living in the cold north, but hey, it cant hurt.

I also started a liquid culture today, and as soon as thats ready, I'll get a few grain jars going.
