Using perilite to top BRF jars...

I just ran out of Verm for my BRF jars and was thinking of using dry Perilite to cap off the top 2cms. Any reason why I shouldn't?

Perlite does exactly opposite of what verm does for you i believe (correct me if im wrong someone) So no, You cant.

Exact opposite? Isn't the top layer of Verm just supposed to act as a dry barrier? Why wouldn't perilite also work in that function?

I dont know either that well, but I think you would not wanna do this. Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I'm rather new here, but it seems like about perhaps once or twice a month this gets freaking asked by somebody. Perlite is a volcanic porous rock, basically good for humidity and wicking water to create RH. I'd say dont do it if you wanna be successful, as I have heard someone say follow the tek they have ALL been proven to work, failure to follow the tek exactly could get less than optimal results.

perlite gets moist and promotes contamination, as opposed to dry verm that stays dry (needs to be soaked to get verm wet) and acts as The Barrier. Perlite absorbs humidity and just keeps releasing and absorbing it. I think. I'd never use verm as top layer either way.

Perlite does not absorb moisture, vermiculite does.

Perlite is too large and course to use as a filter. If you've ran out of verm, use tyvek or polyfill.
