Question about gas exchange in jars

I have a bunch of lids that have a 1/4" hole drilled in them, filled with rtv silicone sealant for a self healing injection point(hole is right in center of lid)(Using 1qt. widemouth jars). After reading more, I realized that there isn't any way for air exchange. Would simply drilling another hole and putting micropore tape over it suffice for air exchange? Or drilling the hole and putting a layer of tyvek over top or something? I dunno about the tyvek cuz it seems like the rtv would push it away from the lid, creating a gap that something could get into. Thanks a lot!

Drill two more 1/4" holes and cover each with two layers of micropore tape. RR

have you been spying on me???
...no,j/k. i do agree though. two pieces of micropore is a BIG part of that. one can get contaminated easily if it gets moist, but two is much harder to get threw for contams.

Thanks so much for the quick response, and your help! Was a little afraid I messed my lids up.

I like to put one piece of tape on the inside and one piece on the outside. That way you don't get grain stuck to the tape when you shake. Plus it creates a thin barrier of air to keep the two layers separated and clean should one of the two get wet.

That's a really good idea. I'm going to start doing that from now on. Thanks!

An even better way, is to cut tiny squares of tyvek. Place the tyvek over the lid holes. Tape it in place, with micropore tape.

I used to do that per your suggestion agar, but then I got lazy. I even used a hole punch for a while to make perfect little circles.
Your welcome boatshow. The only down side is that after a few runs you might want to replace the inside piece depending on how rough it looks. With agar's method it's quite a while before you have to replace the tape.

i just have tyvek between the lid and the ring, and inoculate through the tyvek then put some tape over the hole. just another suggestion.
