Substitute for verm or perlite in soil mixes
    #6737443 - 04/02/07 10:37 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

These are just too expensive for me to buy right now, even in bulk. Especially because I want to set up a raised bed. What can I use that I can buy a whole yard of that will be enough for a raised bed and all my houseplants?

rocks. go to a gravel mart type place, they sell everything from lava rock to pea gravel to fill. if you are in North america you should have something like it. we would buy it by the dumptruck load for houses, and i would sometimes buy it by the 5 gallon bucketfull for small landscape projects. maybe something like 1/8" crushed rock is something you would be interested in?

Yadaki: you could get leca, if they got that where you're at, it works pretty well as a substitute for perlite.

the local construction company around here lets me take all the gravel i want, within reason. I usually pick up a 5 gallon of 1/8 grate limestone, 5 gallon of 1/8 grate dolomite/dolostone, and 1 gallon of powdered limestone...i use the limestone in my mixes in place of perlite. Just ask them, thats what i did, and the guy i asked pointed me to the piles of rocks/gravel...and said 'take whatever you need'

peace

I think home depot will actually deliver. I know they deliver dirt and mulch by me. I'm not sure what the minimum load is and how much you're looking to pay. It might be like three yards. They also sell bags of it. They're more expensive, but you can buy less.

Is your garden that big that you need a whole yard of it? It might be cheapest just to Rototill the soil for aeration and cover it with a mix of topsoil and compost with a few bags of perlite mixed. You could buy topsoil/compost from the same places that would sell the rock. Some towns even have compost facilities that give it to you free if you pick it up. The compost mix holds enough air and moisture to suit most plants, and you have enough nutrients that you don't need artificial ferts if you wanna go organic. That's basically what I'm doing. Every year I mix it up and add another layer. It's also good to keep a pile of it around for any projects you might be doing in your yard throughout the summer.

Sorry, if I diverged from your original question, but I was just throwing out some more options. I guess I should ask what you're looking to spend.
