I spawned this a few days ago w/ 3/4 quart of F+ (formerly known as Un Id) colonised bird seed. I weighed it on my bathroom scale to about 6 lbs including container.

Damn Road, your fast.
There is a problem in the scripting for editing posts. When I try to edit the date in the title of my posts it causes the image tags to only appear at the first and last image address?. So if I have more than one pic it messes with all of the pics between.
So I just am seperating the pics from the original post to avoid this problem in the future. You just caught me between my posts.
I?ll forward this on to Ripper.

The container is my casing container. I spawned horse dung w/ bird seed and am awaiting full colonisation. Once I have complete colonisation I will case it and place it in my fruiting chamber. I left the saran wrap on because I have had bad luck with contams from opening my projects too much. I wish I could offer a better pic, but I want this to work too bad to let any contams a chance to get in. I will post better pics later on as the casing layer colonises.

Joshua,
When you say you spawned the poo with birdseed, does that mean you colonized a jar of birdseed and then mixed it with your poo in this container? How much birdseed to how much poo?
sorry for the retarded questions. Just interested in trying manure....

When it comes to spawn...the more the merrier. Always add as much spawn as possible untill you get an eye for the correct ammount. Bird seed also goes further than other grains, meaning you need less of it.

Hey Joshua,
Have you ever tried the ground up PF cake idea for spawn?
The reason I ask is because 4.5 days ago I innoculated a big tub of pasteurized horse poo with 4 ground up Cambodian PF cakes and I have nowhere near as much growth as you have from birdseed spawn.
I pasteurized at 160-170 for about 45 mins.
I figured my poo would be nearly colonized by now because it was almost completely covered in pf cake "powder". It?s kinda frustrating to see you with that much growth from birdseed spawn. I?ve never tried the strain you?re using though.
There is a slight ammonia smell coming from my poo that I did not notice when I first put it in there. It looks like it?s stalling out for some reason. I have a black plastic garbage bag with holes in it covering the poo now.
Can you or anyone else let me know if there?s something wrong here? This is my first time with horse poo and I followed the tek that Roadkill posted perfectly.
Any comments from you or anyone else are very much appreciated...

I have used PF cake spawn. I usually break the cake up in a baggie. I break it into dime sized pieces. It sounds like you may have blended it a bit too much.
Was your dung wet when you pastuerised it? How long did you let it drain for?
The ammonia smell is definately a bad sign.

Can it be blended too much? I just blended it till it was all "powdered". No chunks left.
I pasteurized it in a pillowcase in a big pot of water. About 170 for 45 mins.
I let it drain overnight and squeezed any excess water off before I innoculated. It was pretty moist though. Whats better, a little on the moist side or a little on the dry side? I could do some more and let it dry more this time.
I also have a few jars of birdseed that I may try too. I just thought blending a pf cake would be better because there would be so many more innoculation points.
Thanks for your time. Any more comments/ideas would be great!

Thanks Vat...I blended it up too much I guess....I powderized it. My tub does show growth though ..oh well....Im pasteurizing more now I will do as Im told with this batch.
My dung was almost all dry beforehand. Maybe a few small pieces were a little gooey still.
I also used straight tap water. Could this possibly be the problem. I know the tek says it may but can someone please tell me what could be in tap water to cause the mycelium to not want to colonize? Or I should say, start to colonize and then stall out. Weird. I was really hoping that the mycelium would tear through this stuff.
If it helps any, last Christmas time I tried bulk growing with straw and had the exact same thing happen. It would start to colonize and after a couple days it would stall out and even start to disappear a bit....
Thanks a lot...

Vatoloco covered what I was going to say. If you blend the cake up too much, you destroy a very large portion of mycelial cells. It could take a while for the mycelium to recover. I can?t even get my cakes to blend. They are much too sticky and wont settle to the bottom of my blender, that is why I use the baggie method.
The idea is to create the most # of innoculation points, you are right in that manner. I believe it is equally important to have a strong base of colonised nutrients to work with as well. I think the mycelium will advance faster if it already has substrate that it is digesting, instead of it having to extract nutrients on the way. So in that manner there is a limit to the size of spawn particles to be used to obtain optimal results.

Actually... blending a cake to powder is no big deal.. it does increase the number of innoculation points true... it also probably destroys lots of mycelial cells as mentioned... but if you grind a couple of cakes to powder and pour them in a casing tray.. it will be fully colonized in 24-36 hours in the right conditions.
Therefore.. I surmise that it really doesn?t do that much damage.
This method has been used to spawn rye straw at a rate of 1/2 pint per square foot of space (1" thick) and full colonization was achieved within a week. So it does work well for some people.

I just cased the F+ colonised horse shizznit w/ 50/50 + mix to about 1 inch. The casing mix was made from 50% coir/50% vermiculite w/ about 1/10 part oyster shell added. I microwaved the mix for 3 intervals of 10 minutes to sterilise it. One interval might have been just as well, but I don?t take chances w/ contams anymore. After the casing was applied I applied a 1.5% peroxide sol?n by misting. Now I will clean my fruiting chamber in preparation for fruiting. As this strain has overlayed quite well in the past, I will be placing it into the fruiting chamber very soon.
Enjoy!

I blunder here, a blunder there, is surely to make a blue thumb much more aware.
The moisture content of my casing layer was too high. As soon as I placed my casing in the fruiting chamber the mycelium started penetrating the casing layer. Here are the pics. The first shots are taken at a strange angle. I am trying to put together a time lapse gif. In order to do this I have to set up my tripod, it has to be a bit crooked. I will work on a better angle for future shots.

That is a broad question. I?ll try to answer.
I use a pressure cooker @ 15 psi for 1 hr for my PF cakes, millet jars, used syringes, scalpel, water for spore syringes, and casing material.
I use Lysol by spraying the air and any surfaces I may be touching while working with my projects.
I use pastuerisation for compost and dung.
I use the oven tek for agar work, making syringes, grain/agar transfers, and all other innoculations.
I use this proceedure for making prints.
If you need something more specific, please let me know.

Yes, according to Stamets in TMC:
Overlay can be caused by excessive CO2, excessive humidity, and excessive vegetative temperatures.
Ideally I would have included enough substrate to bring my casing to the top of my casing container to avoid the build up of CO2, otherwise my conditions were good.
Also, this strain is aggressive and overlays easily.

These pics were taken the morning of 6/28.
I was gone over the weekend for a wedding. This is what I saw when I got back on the evening of 6/30.
I had hoped this flush would start on one side of the tray and sweep across the surface. It looks as if I should have patched the first penetration of mycelium. Maybe next time.

Those are such beautiful mushrooms.
I love it how they all have 3-4 big white specks on the caps.

Se?ior, Those are f**king outstanding! I had a look at the pics of the harvest...Monsters! I am eager to try them out!
I am curious, did those grow from the same side as the last flush or are they growing from the other side?

I am seeing the beginning of the third flush. There are plenty of hyphal knots, I hope I get an even flush. I may pick these If I don?t see others coming up also.

It looks like this flush will be fine! Maybe even better than the 2nd flush.

3rd Flush Harvest, 341 grams [Re: pink_floyd]

I just harvested 341g on my third flush. One mushroom weighed 99.4 grams, the cap was 60 grams. I am very pleased w/ the results. I will continue and see if I can get a decent fourth flush. I will then move the substrate outdoors and integrate it into my garden. The pics for this flush can be found here.
I calculated the biological efficiency of this strain @ 221.3% over three flushes. Of course this calculation is based on this fruiting alone. Biological efficiency of 100% is 25% wet substrate converted to wet fruits by weight. According to Stamets in GGMM a good grower should operate w/i the 75%-125%. Although Stamets is probably referring to edible species I find my results to be excellent.

So basically you harvested atleast 800 grams (i didn?t see measurements for all three flushes) from one 3/4 cake. Seems to me yields like that could definitely make a very effective mass growing technique

I have harvested 1500 grams from this casing. The bulk manure substrate used in this casing was spawned w/ 3/4 quart millet.

I am seeing the beginning of the fourth flush! I went ahead and added a casing layer yesterday, today (1:30 AM) I saw these little babies. I sprayed the casing w/ pure H20 after taking this pic, the coir was looking a bit dry.

The fourth flush came in two parts. The left side of my casing flushed first and then two days later the right side flushed. The total harvest on the fourth fush was 115 grams.
The pics of this flush can be found here.
The complete wet harvest from this casing over 4 flushes was 1621 grams.
I plan on placing this casing in my garden.
