Fastest colonization; Azure or Cub.

So this is what I have done. I did alot of PF tek BRF jars to be used as spawn to both grow bags full of rye (Nepal, cubensis) and to spawn to wood chips (ps. azure).
The incubator reads a steady 82F.
The azure jars colonize way faster than the cubensis jars. I thought that azure would be a slow colonizer until it got hold of some wood to digest?

Or did I mislabel my syringes?

Mislabeled, my azures colonize considerably slower.

Azureescens can colonize spawn quite fast. It's also very white. Even whiter than cubes. Hopefuly, you din't mislabel your stuff. That would be a waste to try to grow azures on manure and cubes on wood.

Have those jars been inoculated at the sametime?

If not, my novice eyes cannot see the difference, but I do see some nice colonization.

They both look too wet. It's next to impossible to tell mycelium from looking. When colonized, both species have distinct fragrance signatures, but you really need to have smelled both before to tell. It's hard, if not impossible to use words to describe a fragrance.

yes, they're both inoculated at the same time.

Guess I'll have to wait untill they are fully colonized and smell the difference. Stamets says that the azures smell unpleasant. And the cubes I have smelled many times before, so telling a difference won't be hard, I hope!

If one is looking for a fast way to get azure spawn where should one look? Rye to cardboard to wood chips?

Rye to supplemented sawdust/chips. Check some of my posts in the gourmet forum. I've given the recipe and preparations there for preparing large filter patch bags of hardwood sawdust/chips supplemented with wheat bran and gypsum.

I have had very good results with the wood lovers in LC then directly to chips. The LC colonization is fairly quick 7-10 days then the colonization of the PCed chips anywhere between 30-60 days. I use a sterile technique all the way through the colonization of the chips then once they are colonized they are used as spawn for the OD beds. The LC consists of the broth used in soaking the chips for several days then boiling for a couple of hours the chips are then drained and that solution is used along with the usual amount of Karo syrup and some coffee. do not strain the broth BTW. Have fun!


Generally cold weather species colonize better at temps lower than that of tropical species this usually translates into longer colonization times. IME with Ps. cyans and Azures they definitely colonize slower than cubies. I agree on the jars being too wet.
