I have heard that you can trip off panther caps. (I know you can) but i dont know if they are any bit more dangerous. They sure as hell are harder to identify.
Anyways in my experience vendors have never sold anything as good as what I have picked in the wild. For those who may ask, "isnt that risky as hell?", for me no, im 100 percent sure of what im picking whether it be muscaria or muscaria V formosa.
In my experience, the m v formosas were by far the best amanitas Ive ever had. I guess the vendors I have used didnt stand a chance.
I dont know much about it beyond that.
I do know that I know little about panthers, and I sure as hell wouldnt pick them If I found any that were picture perfect. Thats because their looks vary so greatly, and I know nothing about them.

Hey man, I'm going to have to look you up when the amanitas start growing again behind my place. My avatar is a picture of one i picked last season. I never got a definitive ID these from this board, but I am 99% sure they are v formosa.
As far as panther caps go, yeah.....they can vary greatly. Personally I wouldn't mess with them. The best amanitas to go for is the muscaria.
