It's probably the latter but you can't be to careful. Is it fuzzy? I have noticed in my exsperience that most contams are usually fuzzy.

Most likely this is not contamination. It is very common in cakes that have been handled or where the humidity has fluxuated drastically, or even where cakes are getting old. Not to worry!

thanks a lot. I didn't think it looked much like contamination, because it wasn't fuzzy, and itjust looked like discoloration of the mycelium, not any new growth or anything.
