Spawn, to substrate ratio?
    #6726672 - 03/29/07 11:03 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

Its a standard to use a 1/10 spawn/substrate ratio correct? How many lbs of compost should I use for every quart of spawn(popcorn) giving it a little extra spawn to compost ratio.?? Thanks

I've read 1:4 ratio usually..

P/corn is the worst possible choice as spawn.
Wbs/millet/milo/rye is FAR FAR BETTER.
Normal spawn ratio for cubes is 5 or 4 to 1.
(20 or 25% spawn)

Ive heard about this, why was popcorn so popular/good and now it sucks? Why is it a bad spawn? My spawn currently which I will be transferring to corn in jars, is a mycobag(black coffee one), so I think it will spawn nicely.

Just to clarify, 2:1 will work just as good. There aren't any drawbacks to using more spawn, correct?

Corn often harbors an insanely high amount of bacterial endospores that survive pressure cooking. In addition, the large kernel size of corn means there is far fewer kernels in each jar, thus less mycelium in each jar than if a traditional spawn such as rye was used. Corn was never good and now bad. It was always bad. That's why not one single mushroom farm uses it for spawn generation, and they depend on success to make a living. Some people have success with corn. I made hundreds of projects with corn and had success, but not at the same rate as with rye, and it was never as good as rye when it comes to grain to grain transfers or spawning, because you need to grow out four or five times as many jars to get the same amount of mycelium, thus further increasing your chances for contamination.

yeah there isn't any drawbacks from using more spawn.

it will help colonize the substrate faster.

but it can be considered a little wasteful.

I like to use more spawn than less,it speeds everything up quite a bit and also contributes to the overall nutrition of the substrate as well

Ive always used more spawn also, just wanted to see how far I could safely stretch it out. I spawned the mycobag to 7 quart jars, with plenty of spawn in each jar.Ive had sucess with corn, but its been years since ive fucked with it. Im gonna spawn 6 quarts to 10lbs pasteurized shit and see if it works good, hopefully it will. I always had serious problems with rye/millet(clumping/burning) so i used popcorn. Roads, RR-what millet/rye tek do you use?

I actually use less, but plan ahead, and plan for possible contams, so i end up with more than i'll need in which case i throw it into my backyard. lol, but a 10% is fine if you got extra time.....then i case it............then i cold shock it......then...fruiting, yay!!!

what can i say, growing Bonsai makes me very patient!!
