what is coffee used for, besides drinking?
Is it a casing additive?

i read that it supposedly speeds up growing which I don't believe.

Whether you believe it or not, the evidence is overwhelming with thousands of growers using it for many years. In fact, at least one commercial oyster farm in my area uses it exclusively for a substrate.

Weak liquid coffee is used to hydrate grains instead of plain water. This provides a nutrient booost, and also lowers pH, which decreases colonization time.

As a substrate additive to other ingredients, it raises the nitrogen levels, and nobody even knows how many of the other hundreds of ingredients such as antioxidants play a part as well.

Use the search function and you'll find several hundred posts on coffee going back to my original experiments in 2003.

IIRC (the pros will know), it serves as a nutrient (N?) additive... inevitably, it helps promote growth.

How could I use this with PF cakes? Could I use light coffee instead of plain water in a PF recipe or hydrate the coir I will use to case ?

You can use weak coffee in the pf cakes, and use spent coffee grinds mixed into the coir. Don't use liquid coffee in the coir or you're likely to get mold. Also, coir is much better to use as a substrate than a casing. It tends to overlay when used for casing.

ok dumb question here.  If you use weak coffee when prepping your pf tek cakes is it a complete substitution of coffee for water in the recipe?  I did try to look this up but coffee in the search brought up about 100 trip reports instead of anything in cult.

Mushbaby, you'll want to dilute the coffee 50/50 with water - and that's recommended strength coffee (how much they tell you to put in on the can). If you make your coffee stronger, adjust by adding more water, and vice-versa.

But yes - any amount of liquid coffee you add, you subtract that much water.

Yes, I had fully colonized cakes in 19 days at near room temps (78-80 degrees) from a multi-spore inoculation. Zero contaminates as well, I might add.

Speeding up the process with a little coffee = good.
Speeding up the process with a additional heat = bad.

speeding up the colinization process? cause i find that very effective. unless you're talking about fruiting, cause f that.

yea, speeding up the colonization process.

you can colonize at room temperatures but it takes longer. How ever, in taking longer it prevents a lot of bacterial infections because the temperatures never get high enough for the bacteria to take a deep enough hold that the mycelium wouldn't win out over it.

When you try to them warmer than 78-80 degrees you will be speeding up the colonization process...and it could even be significantly however you are also now making the conditions ideal for that bacterial infection and you just hoping the mycelium has enough nutrients and genetic durability to win out over any slip ups in your sterile process.

So, my bottom line was supposed to be that speeding up colonization by using diluted coffee solutions was a great idea because it provides a more nutritious environment for the mycelium while also providing a more alkaline environment as well as allowing it to be colonized (if you chose to do so) at room temperatures further reducing contamination risks.

coffee is a nitrogen fix, and speeds mycelium running time.

you can also use worm casings, or if your very strict on your measurements you can use pure organic nitrogen plant fertilizers.

I use a 16-0-0 fertilizer, but if i fuck up the mixture at ALL, i get nothing but death!!! takes practice young grasshopper!
