The cobb? with pics (updated again 2)(Slow fruiting now?!?!?)
    #6727671 - 03/30/07 11:01 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I know this gets asked a lot, and I've looked through all of the previous posts about it, but I need to ask as well.. My cakes, after birthing are growing a fuzzy layer. I'm not sure if it's new mycylium growth, or cob contam. Here's the pics.

New mycelium growth. You'll see hyphal knots soon, then pins.

That's what I thought too, but to be safe, I went out and bought some 3% Peroxide, and sprayed them down, patted them dry, and cleaned the tank.

When I sprayed them, that fuzziness kinda melted. And the fuzziness had a little bit of a gray appearance, compared to the original growth. It grew relatively fast also. Well, maybe over the course of 4 to 5 days.

The thing that makes me think that it wasn't cobb, is that it didn't start in one spot and spread. It just grew all over. That and it didn't smell like anything other than mushies.

That just set your pinning back at least a week. That was healthy mycelium you killed. Cobweb mold is EXTREMELY rare in pf cakes. Dactylium is a contaminant of casing layers, especially peat based. It's also grey, not white.

I'd recommend washing them under the faucet, and then dunking for at least a few hours in plain water. Perhaps that will help mitigate some of the damage the peroxide did.

They're making a nice recovery. Good slow new myc growth, with a little bit of Metabolite secretion. I'll post pics when I get pins.

Hyphal knots just started to develop a couple days ago.. Rabbit was correct. It set back everything by about a week. Here's a pic of some of the knots.

So when you are misting your terrarium or just slightly misting your casing layers....

you dont want to use h2O2?

The pins that have formed are growing really slow. That little one I showed in the picture has maybe doubled in size since I posted that picture. That's six days with almost no growth. I'm not sure why.

I have a fully sealed 10 gallon aquarium for my FC. There's 2 inches of moist perlite. The hygrometer always reads above 90%RH and is usually around 95-100% RH. There's always condensation on the glass inside the chamber. The temp varies from 65-78F. I use a florescent light sitting on top of the chamber (lid is made of glass.) The light cycle varies, depending on my work and school schedule. They get at least 8 hours of light a day. I also fan them about 4 times a day. There's currently no indication of contamination.

I searched extensively on slow fruiting, and there's plenty of great advice, but no one follows up on their posts, so I never know if the advice worked, or the project was bunk. Anyone have any ideas for me? I thought I had everything set up correctly. Thanks in advance, and thanks again to those who have helped me so far.

try dunking them after birth and rolling them in dry vermiculite. should help the friuting.

Your humidity might be too high, which can cause slow growth and aborts (pins that start but then quit), and eventually overlay (sort of a tough 'skin' on the outside of the cake, that no hyphal growth, knotting, or pinning will punch through).

You should do the dunk and roll on future births, as that worked wonders for me compared to 'naked' cakes. You can still probably do it to the ones you already birthed and see if it helps them.

And I would fan quite strongly, as the CO2 you're trying to 'slosh' out of the aquarium is pretty heavy (imagine how dry ice 'smoke' behaves sort of like light water, and then picture how vigorous you'd need to be to displace some of that out of an aquarium). Lack of proper FAE can cause growth to halt also, I know you said you fan them 4 times a day but I'm picturing you doing a very light and careful fanning (maybe to avoid contams) and not a good 'airwhipping'. After birth, airborne contams like mold spores are a lesser concern, especially on naked cakes, and anaerobic bacteria are probably more of a concern, which vigorous fanning will help stave off as they like high CO2 and low O2 (opposite of what mushrooms like).
