Colonization Problems

A friends Cakes have been colonizing for close to 2 months now and they are still not done. Will the uncolonized portion eventually be colonized if he leaves it long enough? The strain is Cambodiasn which are supposed to be fast colonizors. There are lightning bolt strands of mycelium in most of the jars but they just don't look white all around. There are also the begining of pins, so I'm confused. One has begun growing invitro, and my friends afraid it will lead to contamination due to rotting and spread to the other jars. What should he do about the one little mushroom growing invitro, and when should he consider birthing these, maybe early? I don't think leaving them to grow invitro would be a good option cuz they are small jard with almost no room.

are the jars in an incubator, or heated at all? 2 months is a longtime. also they shouldnt start pinning unless youre letting light on em' (could be from peaking in on em too often). what % done would u say they are right now?

Hey,they are not incubated but in a big plastic container in a closet. it's been oretty cold around here, but is just starting to warm up. Id say they are about 89-90 percent, but some have big pronounced brown spots that dont seem to colonize. My friend only checked on em once every couple days or so to make sure there's no contams, he did hold them up to the light momentarily however.

i'd say birth em'. and start a few more and just try to keep em' a lil bit warmer. I rarely use an inc. instead i just throw em in a cabinet (maybe above the refridg) it works miracles. also im assuming you are using BRF. Make sure it isnt packed too tight in the jars.

Sounds like mold to me. Toss them out. Properly made pf jars should colonize in two weeks, three max. If they take longer than that, something is wrong.
You can put some manure or straw in a hole in a shady part of your back yard and mix the cakes in with that, then cover with a 1/2" layer of soil. Often they'll recover and fruit normally outdoors. RR

"but some have big pronounced brown spots that dont seem to colonize" i think he meant that it just wasnt colonizing. brown being the orig. color. too packed, possibly.
a photo could help.

Well, two of them have been birthed including the one that started growing invitro. They seem to be doing ok so far and when check this morning, some white mycelium was growing on the top.

Yeah, a FOAF is on their first attempt and is getting quite a good start on their outdoor spot! Back to reading about sterility.

Ok do what i did, those jars will start to rot soon if you dont use them. The ones that arent fully colonized, forget about fruiting them as cakes, you have to crumble them up and case them. but first you have to take them out of the jars and remove the uncolonized parts. I did this by running them under cold water and rubbing till the uncol subs fell off, then crumble them up and case. they should smell pretty foul by now but dont worry. if they are all uncolonized do the same procedure to all. Casing is the way to go. Hope this helps

Would putting the tupperware container with cakes out on the porch where its 50-60 degrees be better for it than regular "room temperature"? I figure the cold might slow down any bacterial growth it may be succeptible to. Would an interval of lets say 5 hours in the porch room and the rest of the day back in the room help initiate pinning? How bout light? Thanks in advance.

What would a casing layer be made with, 50% vermiculite and 50% peat moss? How would one go about sterilizing, could an oven be used? Thanks for the advice, hopefully those 2 cakes pull through as well.

Yes use 50/verm 50% peat with a little hydrated lime powder, i used crushed egg shells. Just mix it up and micorwave it on high for 4 minuts and let cool. Look at basic casing teks. If you case now you should get a flush within 2 weeks or so.

Pasteurized not sterilized has always worked the best for me

Also, if my friend has a see through tupperware container, could I take a piece of a brand new garbage bag and line it so it doesn't let light in the sides?, or would I have to worry about contams?

Yes, ready to go as you don't have to mess with the mixture by adding anything. Its always a good idea to pasteurize though even though a lot of people will probably tell you its not necessary. I guess you could do the bag. It might be easier to put some duct tape around the outside of the tub on the bottom.

As far as pastuerization of the potting mix goes, can my friend mix boiling water in with it and leave it for a while then drain the excess water? BTW, all this info is invaluablehe's read all the teks over and over but its not the same as having someone answering tailor-made questions for that my friend thanks you dudes (and ladies as well).

Update on the 2 caked birthed, it's been about 4 or 5 days now and they seem to be doing good. One is starting to look a lot more healthier, with a fresh layer of mycelium colonizing, and what looks to be a very early start of some pins. (you know those Reeeeaaallll little dots) No bad smell, no visible anomalies, my friend is FAEing 2-3 times a day along with misting the same number of times with spring water.

Ok,just got jinxed, my friend looked just now and there was like a piece of oozy green stuff the size of a very small booger on one cake, so my friend took it out and disposed of it.
