Microwave jar of water to sterilize and create syringes?

I was going to fill a mason jar with tap water put saran wrap on the top and place in the microwave for 3 minute. After it cooled place a print inside and suck up into a syringe. Does this sound good enough?

nah, saran wrap won't melt... Yea I assume if you bring the water in the jar to a boil for a few minutes it would be perfectly fine... just my opinion; I'm no expert by any means
Edit: Actually, I don't think you would even need to cover it if you're going to boil it

weird...i never knew saran wrap could be microwaved.
personally, i think it would be easier to fill the syringes with water, wrap in tin foil, and simmer/PC for and hour...then just squirt the water into the print and suck it back in. maybe use an extra syringe so that you get full ones.

I've microwaved karo/water solution in a plastic tupperware that had a small nail-sized hole in it covered entirely w/ saran wrap to make a liquid culture. Wiped the saran wrap over the hole down w/ alcohol, shot spores in, left it to grow myc. w/ micropore tape over the hole, and took it back out. I've also used it to just put spores in there and draw out karo/water/spore solution into syringes and let it grow but it's less effective b/c there's no gas exchange.
Worked just fine but if you have a pressure cooker then you should just get pumped for a bit and forget about being lazy :P

Just pressure cook a jar of distilled water with a filter on it and don't take chances. Microwaves are usually the filthiest appliance in a house because there's no way to clean up inside the area where the fan circulates air past the magnetron tube and back to the chamber. I don't consider microwaves suitable for any mycology project. Others disagree, but that's my stand. I hate failure, and go to great lengths to avoid it. RR

Another option-
Go to the grocery. Look in the baby food aisle. Find the Pedialyte sterile water.
I have not tried this, but I do not see why it would not work. __ __ __
I may try an experiment in the near future:
Get the Pedialyte. Swab the foil seal with 70% alc. Insert syringe through seal. Suck up the appropriate amount of water per syringe. Inject the water into a sterile jar w/ lid and spores (from print) then draw up the solution through the syringe.
I should mention the lid of the jar would need to have a large enough hole for a 16-18G needle.

Syringes would not work. You cant put a metal needle in a microwave or else

Uhhh...no one suggested putting a needle in the microwave.

It is not quite that simple. I did just prepared an LC, in the microwave, though.
Going to innoc, as soon as cooled to room temps.
And, for anybody who might argue. A microwaved LC doesn't work. Here is a test jar from last week.
It's all in the lid & knowing how.

Hrm so I don't want to throw this thread off topic but agar has a note to not PM about mush/cult questions which I guess this falls under...
Agar, what's your method on getting good pictures of LC? I had success before by putting it in front of a black tray with light shining in on the myc but it has lately been hit or miss getting good focus on the myc instead of the jar or something else.

Focus a lamp to the side, or under it. Take about 10 shots & pick a good one.

Haha that simple huh? Well I just took another stab at this and here's the results. Turned out way better than what I had been getting recently though...wonder why.
(Acadian Coast) And just a shot of the jar the LC is in which is about the clarity I normally get from a picture of an LC lol:

Anyhow thanks for the response...back on topic!

i sterlize my needle and MEtal tips in the Microwave all the time..the metal neele is too little of metal to actually cause problems...
Honestly tho I sterilize the whole needle in the microwave in a tupperware container in about 2-3 inches of water with the lid 3/4 the way secured run the microwave for about 5 mins...

It should be noted that if you're using karo, you don't need to sterilize at all. Mrs rabbit has a jar of Karo that she's been using for nearly a year, opening it in the kitchen and sometimes leaving it open for the whole time she's cooking and it has zero contamination in it. When I say don't microwave LC, I'm referring to using malt extract/yeast, which should be PC'd for half an hour.
As for distilled water for syringe making, as agar said, a good filtered lid is the key, so anything that makes the water boil to kill off bacteria is going to work. Personally, I pc mine. RR

Sterilizing needles in the MW? With all due respect, this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
Put a staple in the microwave and see what happens.
FYI: Just to prove this point, I stuck an extra needle in a MW (in my garage, of course). It took 1/10 of a second to start making a ZZZZZZ sound and a flash of electricity.
I call bull shit.

D'no...it's probably not the smartest idea but it could probably work without blowing anything up. You ever put a CD in your microwave just to see the lightning show? That doesn't blow up your microwave...at least it hasn't blown up any of my old friends'
