Well, I've just signed up for this and got it running. I always leave my computer on, so hopefully this will do some good!

Even if the 360 did have folding, I wouldn't want to leave it (or my rare and expensive PS3, for that matter) on just to Fold.

I leave my "rare and expensive" computers on 24/7 to fold, and they'd be way more inconvenient and costly to replace than a game console.

Nothing anymore, I guess.

I leave my computers on 24/7 anyway, but for other reasons. I just figured that the stress of running for a long time wouldn't be healthy for game consoles, which for aesthetic and price reasons are poorly ventilated.

Im a tech guy and I will vouch that if air quality is great your electronics with CPUs and Hard Drives staying on all the time with CPU @ 100% folding will most likely make it last longer than if it was powered up and then shut down in a cycle.

Expansion and contraction affect everything.

If you keep anything at a constant it will degrade less over time.

Thats absolutely correct, in years past with older style processor sockets, the expansion and contraction of letting the processor heat up, then cool down when shut off cause 'Chip Creep' which is basically when the processor (or any other chip not held in place) would wiggle itself out of the socket causing a non-booting system. I would also like to note, I just joined the Shroomery F@H team, I am running it on several multi-core machines across my network.

While I'm psyched to have finally broken into the top 100 for Team Shroomery , I just noticed that the team as a whole has dropped out of the top 100 overall.

I LOVE seeing that this community outperforms tens of thousands of others.

We're currently 112th out of 117,882 teams.  I just brought a second processor online.  Go team!

I just installed on my weak compy at work- not fast, but better than nothing.

We leave our systems on at home on occasion, like when we're in and out of the garage/party central.  My roommate's an engineer, and might be able to appreciate the value of crunching data like this...if so, I'll sign on his phatty dual core machine as well as (of course) my dual core at home.  Both have x1600 or better ATI cards...hmmmm...of course, we don't want to use up precious cycles when gaming...must think on this.

And I think I'll have to put the secretary downstairs on as well

It's neat, I've participated in dist. comp. (I'm not personally concerned with SETI, etc) but this project sounds valuable enough to be worth my involvement.

Also, it's cool to see this community participate in a project like this!

If youre worried about games, you can set it to have a low priority and only use so much cpu, or to only come on after x minutes of inactivity, or set it to not automatically come on at all.

I just have it to come on after 30min inactivity, and it works fine. Course I don't anymore cuz my laptop dies from heat, but there ya go.

Re: Multi-core processors (AMD) [Re: johnm214]

I recall reading that someone noticed that only one core was running while folding...I assume they gathered this info through ctrl-alt-del "performance" tab.

Mine works with both cores, so says the graph.

I wonder if it could have anything to do with processor drivers or that AMD dual-core "optimizer" software?

Also, I decided to do some >5mb work units at home...those proteins are some big boys compared to the little guys on my office compy.

It's sort of addictive to see how much work's been done, and also interesting to read about the various projects.

could someone please tell me why it keeps telling me there is a core download error, and tries multiple times to get the new core? i completed 1wu and now it's doing this crap for the last hour.
it looks like it's downloading, the numbers run up to around 70,000bytes really fast then tells me there's an error. i couldn't find any info about this.

I think that using your spare CPU cycles to solve complex scientific problems for the better is great!

One question, if i install this folding program to more CPUs, will all of them be able to run under my username??
