so if i had root on say, 10 linux machines with SMP would I possibly be able to become a 'top producer' if I loaded Folding@Home on them all, including my home machine?

I just went into an LSD laugh.' Jimi looked over to Herbert, realised that he too was peaking out on acid, tried to say something to Herbie, but it wouldn't come out. - Jimi Hendrix "Electric Gypsy"

yo if you had 10 decent machines no matter what OS, you would still need to grind hard to become a top producer. unless you used the GPU client which is awesome.

If they're trying to get top, the regular client won't barely help them.
EDIT: IMO the GPU client is about 15x faster

So, just how efficient is the PS3 at running F@H? I've been tempted to run mine for a few days just to find out. But I really don't want to put the strain on the machine. Its just for gaming and an occasional blu-ray, and I can't replace worn out parts like I can on my PC.

PS3 should be under warranty
And it will probably only break if it was bad to begin with. Which is actually a good thing cause then you caught it before the warranty is up

Hey, this is my first post!! too bad its not something more intresting. Am i able to run folding@home on vista on a guest account? And also anybody know why on my display of the folding process there are no buttons or statistics like iv seen other people have on youtube. It just shows a 3D protein spinning on a black backround and thats it, nothing else. Thanks. I look forward to contributing more to the site!
P.S. dual core 2.4gz processor with Nvidia 9800M GT card. it takes me 24 hours to pump out 1 WU thats 10,000 units long is this good or not? im working on my 2nd WU now.

If you scroll up a few posts you can see, the GPU client is about 15x faster than the SMP client. Nice box.

Damn, I was hoping to be able to beat Ythan but that's not going to happen unless I get some new hardware. I've given up for now; I can't afford to keep contributing right now because I dont want another massive power bill. I produced the most points using the following PC's:
Desktop: Intel Core2Quad Q9450 @ 3.2ghz, GeForce 8800GT 512mb, 4gb DDR2-800 Home Theatre PC: Intel Core2Duo E7300 2.6ghz, 2gb DDR2-800 Laptop: AMD Turion64 x2 2.6ghz, 2gb DDR2-667
I think if I get a nice AMD Radeon 4830 video card for my HTPC I might be able to beat you, Ythan :P
Good luck to all the other folders out there....

hows the i7 workin out? i know they have a gpu version of folding, so there's quite a bit of variables. when you test it could you let us know like if its just the cpu doing the folding, and how it compares to say, a ps3?

Ps3 wins Hands down. The "Cell" chips have 8 cores and fold like no other. The only way to compare would be to say that the GPU client is significantly faster than the CPU client and it still lags behind Ps3's.

can you run the cpu and gpu client at the same time? which makes me then wonder, does the ps3 use its gpu when its folding?
the cell must be a bit outdated at this point tho, i think the only reason the cell does so well is because its designed better for number crunching, where as cpu's are better for multitasking. honestly i don't know much about all that but the i7's should be some beasts
intel was talking about putting gpu's inside the cpu's, and nvidia was going to make a cpu lol. it seems as tho the cell is kinda like a gpu

It is a faster CPU is all. It's FSB is beyond that of my Phenomx4 @1000hz. You can run the SMP client to take advantage of all your cores in multiple core CPU systems and as many instances of the GPU as physical processors inside your machine. Currently I run 2 GPU clients and the SMP client, and the SMP client on my Laptop as well.
To my knowledge Nvidia has already produced their CPU it just has not hit the market yet, but I could be wrong.

So I broke top 100 recently, still not even close to Ythan though.
Going to test F@H on my dual quad core Nehalem's.. should be fairly quick.

Tell me how the core i7 works out for you
Only tried in linux, wanted to test in windows but I haven't had any free time lately I couldn't get smp going, So I ran 4 separate ones
I find a core2quad q9550 server was about 10% faster then the core i7 940 Core i7 is pretty damn snappy and responsive, I think the raw cpu power is lacking a bit

i think the reason the i7 isn't as good as it should be is because intel is full of a bunch of assholes that always keep you wanting more. for example, they release a new processor....with less cache wth? if an i7 had 12mb or more...which is what it should have done, at least 16mb. then they would be smashing amd into the ground. thats the common theme ive been noticing as im about to upgrade my computer, almost every single product i look at, im thinking all they had to do was this or that and they could have had a perfect product, they must be doing it all intentional as the trend is way to consistent.
you can pay $400 for a motherboard and there's still things that are wrong with it...it just doesn't make sense
