I stopped doing this Folding@home thing because my laptop started making some loud noises. Also, there's no way I'm gonna win the contest at this point...

yeah I'm curious if this puts too much strain on the hardware
I bluescreened once, running the GPU client, when I went to view the display mode. Haven't tried to view it since

That was a bug they've been having, not due to the strain.

When is it going to be fixed? I really want to participate in this, even if I don't win the contest, but I most definitely will not do so at the risk of my hardware.

OK The GPU version gives me BSOD (with brand new components in my pc) so I dont mess with it. Is it possible to run the GPU version on the tray without running the visual display that crashes me? Then I could run GPU on 1 core, and the single core client on the other to maximize my folding.
I use the Windows SMP version on my Wolfdale E8500
How do you make top 20? Just have to have the most powerful computer possible or what? so those top 20 are the most powerful computer owners running fold@home? is that it?

I just went into an LSD laugh.' Jimi looked over to Herbert, realised that he too was peaking out on acid, tried to say something to Herbie, but it wouldn't come out. - Jimi Hendrix "Electric Gypsy"

fastest "computers", so you can give friends your name and have them run units under your name, effectively cheating at least in my eyes.
but i guess they are doing it by daily figuers, so all you have to do is beat alex for one day to start it over, and hold it for a week and you win

All my folding clients are on my own computers and/or my workstation at work which I am allowed to run whatever I want.

Everyone I know with a PS3 doesn't even have it connected to the Internet. I have looked into a few of my old and outdated computers and found that I can easily put together 3 computers, but only 2 of them have the capability of running a stand alone GPU, but I can still add 5 more processors to my catalog.
I am still helping for a good cause tho so I'm okay with that even if I don't win.

The Folding@home project has published a number of papers in publications including Science and Journal of Molecular Biology. I'm way out of my league when it comes to evaluating the relative importance of their results, but some that look interesting to the layperson include:
Investigating the cause of Htt protein aggregation in Huntington's disease Better understanding of how the flu virus functions Research into the functioning of ribosomes, which create proteins and are fundamental to human life Learning about membrane fusion, which is part of many biological processes but poorly understood
There are many others too. And they also have a number of papers related to validating and explaining the techniques and technology they're using, since they've done a lot of work in those areas to advance the project.

31 points/day you mean? I average 151 atm.. The GPU client is way better but it seems to slow my computer else I would run it all the time.
