My first flush woooohoooo! (with trich) awwwwww!
    #6724796 - 03/29/07 02:34 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So here's the latest update of my first grow. Really nice pinset, with pins showing only 4 days after initiating pinning. It's only been 1 week of fruiting, and I'm already harvesting. Only problem (a big one now that I let it get out of control) is the day I noticed pins I spotted trich. I tried killing it off with peroxide and alcohol, which seemed to slow it for a few days, but the casing was drying out so I really put some water to it. The water helped the mushrooms grow, but also the trich. Now when I harvest, I notice the mycelium underneath is blue green. To make matters worse, a few caps have been infected with bacterial blight.

I know I should've thrown it out upon first sight of the mean green, but upon seeing the pinset I just couldn't do it. Now I'm cultivating as much trich as mushrooms. So now for the pics:

First 2 pics show the tubs as a whole, notice upper left hand corner, all trich

Third pic I tried to show the bacterial blight, but the couple that definitlely had it I already pulled

Just a closer shot of the right corner

Trich corner

Closer up of the trich invading mushroom growing space

So I know I fucked up by not pulling the whole tub IMMEDIATELY, After all the time I already put in I just couldn't throw it away after seeing the amount of pins I had. But since I'm in this far I'm gonna let it run its course so I can harvest my full first flush.

I guess my question is how bad did I fuck myself for all future grows? Am I wasting my time to even attempt future grows because of the inoculum base present not only in my growing area, but whole living space?

I'm still going to keep trying, but what precautions am I going to have to take in order to be successfully contam free in the future?

If you have to, be harsh I can take constructive criticism, if it means I may be successful later. Don't hold back, let me know how bad I fucked up!

I wasn't expecting compliments, I was expecting harsh criticism over not throwing it away. Well I'll take 'em. Thanks! I'm pretty excited in spite of...

So what do you guys think, is it still possible to continue with future grows, or are the inoculum levels in my house going to be too much?

eh, according to others on here it's ok as long as the actual mushroom is not contammed. If they smelled bad, or were obviously rotting... then I wouldn't, but the contams are limited to the sub and casing layers.

sometimes you can get a stomach ach from shrooms grown near trich. It seems to vary from person to person. My advice to you is find oust air sanitizer and use it on your next grow. Nice job though

What do you mean? Are you asking if you will ever be able to grow in your house again? If that's what you're asking, of course you'll be able to grow again. Just clean and work on your sterile technique. Maybe get a HEPA filter.

I've experienced this as well, and I'm not sure why that is. Mushrooms sharing mycelium with trich do upset my stomach more, even though the mushrooms aren't supposed to transfer anything like toxins through the mycelium.

I noticed it without thinking it over first, also, so it's not the placebo effect, either....

Yeah, they give me a stomach ache a lot of times, but I never knew if they were grown near contams because I would always buy them up until now. Funny thing is I did use oust, I think the problem was how long it took the myc to colonize the coir.

Boatshow- I just heard trich was a mean bitch to get rid of even if you've only had a little.

psilog-thanks for looking out for me

sillycybin- do they upset your stomach to the point you wish you hadn't ingested them, or a little discomfort that goes away? How bad is it?

Ehh, it's always worth it because I love tripping. I just know I'm going to have to pay a price, now, if I eat shrooms that have had trich near them. I usually end up having to take a little bathroom break - heh. Gut cramping can be a little tough for a few minutes, but not unbearable.

EDIT: I've noticed if I filter out the fruit material, this does not happen. I do this by simmering/stirring the ground shrooms in water on the stove for 30 minutes, then filtering the water through a coffee filter and discarding the mush. Mix the water with some OJ, and whala.

does making tea ever make it better for you? I have definitely had to take bathroom breaks before, and I didn't know who grew them.

Try peaking at bonnaroo and having to use those shitty portapotties before galactic goes on and a big ass parade marches past while you're in one of those sweat boxes in the dark!

Sorry for the nasty description!
