sounds like an ad marketing towards college stuents trying to take a slice of Macbook's pie.

Competing firms have been doing this since forever - nothing new here. Remember Mac ads back when Microsoft had a practical monopoly? yah me either.

Dooooooooo it. Ubuntu is a good distro, but wait a little bit longer - their new release is coming out soon (forget when exactly, but soon) - very easy to install, very user friendly.

One of the things holding me back is how to make Linux as compatible as Windows as possible...Wikipedia lists a whole bunch of options:

GNOME
KDE
Wine
NdisWrapper
VirtualBox
CrossOver
CygWin

KDE has a very similar feel to Windows - doesnt require much of a learning curve.

OpenOffice does the trick for word processing / spread sheet type needs.

Most windows applications have open-source linux counterparts.
And, with Ubuntu 7.04, its pretty easy to get your windows programs running under linux - read here

Unix/Linux belongs in the workplace and workstation realm, not the john-doe end user space.  The more dumbed down they make lnux the more idiots run it and ruin itfor the rest of us.  You buy apple if you are not smart. :frown:

Why do you say that? I really don't get some of the geeks who seem to get jealous when a home-user/non-geek decides to try Linux. Its like those emo-indi kids who get pissed off once their favorite band has a video on much music.

Its a good OS, its fast, its stable - and for many people, its more than capable of doing everything that they need to do on a computer.

Really, *MOST* people I know (outside of geeks/gamers/graphic designers), use their computers to

- Check email
- Surf the net
- Chat on MSN
- Play flash games

All of which (and much more) is more than adequately done by Linux.
And, the great thing about Linux - is that it comes in dozens of flavors. Does it really matter if Ubuntu gets more user friendly when you still have your Gentoo that you can geek out over and tweak every which way?

And anything which helps create more competition with the end-user OS market is a good thing IMO, as it will just force the other players to up their game and try and do better (Sadly, MS seems to have failed horribly with Vista)
