Verm/Perlite/Coir Casing question
    #6715341 - 03/27/07 01:39 AM (16 years, 11 months ago)

agar said this somewhere:
Quote:

one uses 60/40 Vermiculite/Perlite mix.
With about 5% coir added.
You don't even have to fool with Ph adjustments.
(but, it is advisable to add a cup of oyster shell flour

Try a 60/40 Verm/Perlite casing layer.
With a small handful of coir mixed in.
Add a handful of oyster shell flour, if available.
Hydrate, nuke repeatedly in a bag, cool overnight.

There is so little organic material in it.
Tric has almost nothing to germinate/grow/survive on.

Ok, so this is currently being used by someone. It was made exactly as described. It is currently on day 4 and myc is hardly penetrating casing yet except for a couple thin spots near the edge. Do you think it is just gonna take a couple days longer than peat/verm does because of the scarcity of organic material?

that casing mix in my opinion is weird all i use is peat verm limestone (with low magnesium) and oyster shell flour for long ph buffer and it usualy takes 4-7 days for it to break through.....you might just have a weak batch ? wait 7-10 days if it doesnt show by then, then i would worry

Patience was indeed the key. Everything is going good now. This casing looks like a winner.
