Monitoring my wifi
    #6717115 - 03/27/07 04:38 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

so for years and years, I borrowed internet from the neighbors that were sharing free wifi, whether knowingly or not

Now, I have money and my own cable internet and a wireless network, so I'm returing the borrowed free wifi, sign on my door "free wifi"

I don't know if any neighbors use it or not...

is there a way to monitor their use of my wireless connection?

I'm guessing "yes", I'm just computer stupid and struggled getting the wifi set up

so is that morally/legally wrong to track someone elses internet use through my own network?

Check the DHCP leases on the router, or check the logs.

Past that, for deeper more intrusive monitoring, you will need a hardware router running unix or linux and special logging and monitoring programs.

To check the currently passed out DHCP leases, you must log into your router, generally through an HTTP interface on most home routers. The address you connect to, in your browser of choice, is the gateway IP address, which should be either 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or 10.10.10.1 or so. Use ipconfig to check it out.
