Balance...
    #6713082 - 03/26/07 02:05 PM (17 years, 25 days ago)

How does one go about improving their balance?

..Recently I've taken up skating again as a means of staying healthy.. but to be honest my balance is pretty piss poor. I mean.. I can skate, but when it comes to doing things that require control & balance (such as landing tricks into a manual / lip tricks) my balance is sketchy as fuck. I can manual like 5m on a good day.. I'd like to improve this.

How do I go about improving my balance?

They make boards with a wedge in the middle of them that you practice your balance on. You could probably make your own with a 2x4.

haha nah screw that.. is it literally a matter of practising?

Any particular techniques I could do around the house that might help? I'm also looking to increase my flexibility.. I mean as I'm getting older I'm noticing I'm nowhere near as supple as I once was :frown:

Like gumby said, they do make balance boards. I've been using one for several months now and the results are interesting. While I've lifted weights for years, the balance board works muscles you never knew you had. My first board only cost about $10.00 at Walmart. I've since moved to a more expensive more advanced-type board (the center balance point is smaller).

For at-home balance: Try standing on one leg. If this is too easy, shut your eyes.

Start with that, then move to doing one-legged squats.

I have a loft in my apartment, I often climb the ladder without hanging on (be careful though).

A lot of yoga involves balance, do a quick google for some basic yoga techniques. Balance is like a lot of other physical activities, it (obviously) involves muscle movement, you need to strengthen those same muscles and that takes a little time and effort.

work out your core muscles, abs/lower back. Strengthening this area will make balancing a lot easier.
