360 degree / coir / cake / casing AF LC 1

Ok, so it's not exactly 360 degrees, but hey... ...it's an experiment.
1)
 (top shelf of GH)
2)
(second from top shelf in GH)
And a close-up of the upper right hand corner of #1:

Fruiting is occuring on the top and sides on both #1 and #2, but #1 has one fruit on the bottom. Number #2 has many hyphal knots forming on the "bottom" of the casing/cake.
Time will tell how the coir holds up to the braided fishing line suspension, and to the constantly high humidity.
Sorry, I have no question, but I hope you enjoy the post and/or leave some feedback.

The only issue I see is that you'll need different climates for the cased plane compared to the other 5 sides. RH that is necessary to keep the uncased sides from drying will oversaturate the cased plane. Luckily, though, it's inverted so that droplets can run off.
This experiment might actually be more useful to an uncased bulk fruiting at 98-100%RH.
Keep us updated....

Well, the way the GH is set up it produces the thick mist enough to put microdroplets on surrounding materials (but not the fruits), and then the cool mist will come on 3 different times (15 min increments over the course of 5 hours), and 80% of microdroplets will evaporate during this time leaving a near optimal condition for both cakes and casings. (and the fruits don't seem to mind their fluffy myc blanket at the bases)
In this case the casing layer was simply added to further stimulate fruiting, and any excess (uncolonized casing material) was removed when the tub was inverted and was gently tapped on the bottom when birthing.

Thanks; I get bored easily.
(and I'm also lazy...which is why I never covered the bottom of the tubs with foil/garbage bags in the first place) LOL
Plus, between HippieChicks water-tray method, and impressive weigh-in numbers on side pinning mushies...I just had to try this.

Great fun.
Way back when, we used to do flat trays inspired by the vertical oyster mush boxes in Mother Earth News.
We would use glass cake dishes. Layer casing, spawn grain about an inch and half and then top case. Plastic wrap over for moisture control. When the casing was well held by myc. The flats would be turned out into bird netting, the type used to protect fruit trees. Then the open side would be stitched together with a wooden dowel and the whole thing hung in a foam ice chest and plastic wrap covered.
Boy did the Brothers and Sisters like to see me coming to a party with a cheap ice chest!

#1 did great too, but #2 was absolutely phenomenal IMO
(considering those last pics were after I had picked all big ones with opening caps yesterday, and that these were the "small" ones from the day before)
There was a 6-7" mushie on the backside of #2, but it was growing off the very bottom near where the casing material touched the plastic.
They were personally ravaged by me this morning; both will be fully cleaned (remaining pins removed), and dunked for at least an hour a piece.
More pics to come if/when there is flush #2.

Dunked both #1 and #2, and returned them to the GH immediately.
(put them both on the top shelf due to increased humidity at the top of the GH)
Re-hydrated perlite in the GH, and repositioned pan so it catches drips from the ultrasonic.
Flush #2 Underway
#1)
(propped up with an inverted ceramic bowl and a Mason lid)
#2)
(propped and elevated with two pint size Mason jars)

Hehe, I've been waiting since the start of the thread for someone to ask that question.
It's (kind of) in the title "AF"; they are African Transkei.
Thanks for asking.

ah, i love the transkei shrooms. they are fun guys. I was going to attempt something like this, but i was going to make my bulk substrate around two 1/4" airlines, and when it is colonizing it'll colonize around the tubes, and then insert wire thru the tubes to hang it from two points to help relieve stress to the substrate.
i havent dont this yet, but it's in the works soon. good stuff man!!

3rd flush was severely diminished with quite a few nice, printable fruits though. Worth keeping around for the 3rd flush, but a waste of time (and battery life) to take pictures.
Conclusion of this experiment is simply:
If you spawn rye to straight coir, and are going for minimal turnover time in the greenhouse...then keep the casings for 2 flushes. Three flushes if you don't have more casings coming along soon OR need some more prints to start new spawn.
Thanks, friends...I'm done with this thread now.
Peaceful journies to you all.
EDIT: P.S.-- 3rd flush between the two was around 280g fresh
