Peroxide changed mycelium?
    #6703342 - 03/23/07 02:22 PM (17 years, 14 hours ago)

I started off a few jars that were filling up nicely with mycelium so I decided to prevent any contamination at this stage to add a squirt of peroxide... This however, turned a lot of my mycelium yello-ish and not so fluffy anymore. It looks like it almost hardened in some parts. There is still some fresh mycelium growing that is white but it is growing so slow... what should I do?

What possessed you to add peroxide?

Did you open the jars to put your "squirt" of H2O2 in?:(

Bad idea if so.

Yeah, well... I read it should be added to prevent s contamination... I also was seeing a few black spots, so I scooped them out and then added a little peroxide.

You "scooped" them out?

How?

Were you sterile?

everything was sterile... all out sterile spoon in a sterile spot... pretty much all of that. I guess I should have just cut my losses

Just toss the jars out and start over. They're toast.

Peroxide is highly toxic mushroom mycelium. Don't use it except perhaps to clean off your tables and tools, and it makes a pretty good mouthwash if you have bad breath. I've tried all the peroxide teks and consider them as bunk as the 'oven tek'. To prevent molds, use sterile procedure, not peroxide.

Peroxide is reactive with mycelium, but it's much more reactive with contams. I've had good luck using very, very weak concentrations of peroxide as a preventative measure. No damage to the mycelium, no yellowing, no contamination. 0.3% or so is usually good (1 part 3% solution to 9 parts water).

When mycellium gets yellow and hard from peroxide it is virtually dead and does not recover at all. But it seems that it does not rot or contaminate either. And... all this talk that straight 3% peroxide does not harm mycellium is BS. The people who claim this can not have used a real 3% solution.
BTW I've had success fighting cobweb with straight 3% peroxide, you lose an area of mycellium but you may save the rest of the tray.

geko if you're referring to figgusfiddus' post he said .3% peroxide. I don't know but I think some people also say 3% peroxide 97% water too, which is confusing since peroxide you buy at the store is generally 3-4% peroxide.

I've been misting with a solution that's just eyed out...a little bit of peroxide (much less than 1:10 w/ water) in the mister where I can smell it a little but it's not anywhere near drying out my hands. Working fine on my cakes w/ no noticeable harm though it could be harming it and I just don't know or something...

To avoid confusion, people should mention the percentage of hydrogen peroxide they USE. If you have 30 count peroxide such as it is measured in Europe, it is at ten percent. If you dilute it three to one, you have 3.33% peroxide. If you purchase it at a drug or grocery store in the US, it comes in 3% concentration. If you dilute it ten to one, you have roughly .3% after mixing.

As I said above, peroxide is toxic to mycelium, all mycelium, therefore it is hated by mushrooms and mold alike. If you have an outbreak of Dactylium, you can spray the casing layer with it to wipe out the cobweb. This doesn't hurt the mushroom mycelium because Dactylium rarely colonizes over the top of mushroom colonized casing layers. I've found it's a mistake to use as a preventative measure because it sets the mushroom mycelium back and makes it less aggressive, then the faster recovering molds get the upper hand. Sterile technique will prevent molds in spawn, and fresh air exchange will prevent most molds in the growing environment, so go with that for best results.
