Access home network from elsewhere

I have recently got an old laptop and upgraded to a wireless network at home.
Now I would like to be able to access my home network and all the shared files on it from school. I have cable internet, and my home computers are always up and running.
How can I do this?

You need to install and run some sort of service to serve the files, such as FTP. A good, free windows FTP server is FileZilla. I recommend serving from a dedicated *n?x box for efficiency, security, and all that, but it really doesn't matter TOO much and is beyond the scope of this post.
After you have some method to access your files remotely, you need to set up port forwarding on your router to forward the TCP or UDP ports of the application from the router to the server. Sometimes, port forwarding isn't quite enough, so you may have to put the server computer in the network DMZ so it can send and receive data on all ports, though if you do this, make sure you have taken some time to secure the box.
Finally, once you have a server to serve data and you have routed everything properly, you will need a method to access your computer from outside the network mnemonically. To do this, you will need to determine if you have a static or dynamic IP address. You likely have a dynamic IP address that doesn't change TOO often because you are on cable. If your IP address is static, you can simply point a domain name from a domain name service such as namecheap to your IP address. If your IP address is dynamic, you will need to set up dynamic DNS. Namecheap offers dynamic DNS service for domains you purchase through them. Alternatively, you can use a free dynamic dns service such as no-ip.
Also, note that ISPs are generally against home users serving things, so often they will aggressively filter ports and shut things down on you just to be assholes, ESPECIALLY with HTTP on port 80. Generally, I have had good luck with FTP over many ISPs. Have fun and good luck.
