Unreliable batches of cakes
    #670881 - 06/10/02 02:42 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I have a problem: of my last 5 batches of PF cakes, 3 worked fine with no problems and few contams, however the other 2 completely failed. None of the spores germinated at all. What makes it confusing is that I used the same recipie and spores and followed the same teks for all 5 attempts.
Do your cakes randomly fail? Any ideas what could be causing this?

Is it possible that bacteria contamination would stop any sign of mycelium?

could be a number of reasons.
bacterial contam......bad syringes......weak ass syringes.....wet substrate....dry substrate....and probably a few more things could have cause that.
I've been up all night and can't think no more!

good luck!

Thanks road. I just didn't realise bacteria would stop the mycelium from appearing in the first place, and I'm sure the spores and substrate are ok. But after giving em a quick sniff I think bacteria is probably the problem.

I use 2cc's per jar now instead of 1cc. Does help IMO.
Also, are you letting them sit or incubating them?
Cause the longer they are sitting the more likely you are to get contams.
Also here is my advice on inoculating. I have only ever had 1 jar contam.
And i dont use a glove box and shiznit.

I do this:
Spray the air everywhere with lysol.
I flame the needle before innoculating, and I use alcohol stuff on a cotton swab to wipe it down and cool it off. I dont waste spore solution cooling it off.
Also.....this is important IMO.....Where a face mask if you have one!!!!
Even if you dissenfect everything, the moment you breathe out there goes all the work you did trying to be sterile. By a cheap face mask thingy. That is why I think I have had good luck with contams. Knock on wood!
Also, I tell me bro to get the fuck outta the room so he doesnt breathe either...hehe.

If you do not wait for your jars to COMPLETELY cool before you innoculate them, a lot of the time they will die from the heat.
