One way to measure the dangers of various drugs is to examine how toxic the drug is at various levels. Can too much kill you? And how much is too much? Here's an interesting article on what we know scientifically about the matter. Money
The most toxic recreational drugs, such as GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) and heroin, have a lethal dose less than 10 times their typical effective dose.
The largest cluster of substances has a lethal dose that is 10 to 20 times the effective dose: These include cocaine, MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine, often called "ecstasy") and alcohol. A less toxic group of substances, requiring 20 to 80 times the effective dose to cause death, include Rohypnol (flunitrazepam or "roofies") and mescaline (peyote cactus). The least physiologically toxic substances, those requiring 100 to 1,000 times the effective dose to cause death, include psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana,
when ingested. I've found no published cases in the English language that document deaths from smoked marijuana, so the actual lethal dose is a mystery.
My surmise is that smoking marijuana is more risky than eating it but still safer than getting drunk.
Alcohol thus ranks at the dangerous end of the toxicity spectrum. So despite the fact that about 75 percent of all adults in the United States enjoy an occasional drink, it must be remembered that alcohol is quite toxic. Indeed, if alcohol were a newly formulated beverage, its high toxicity and addiction potential would surely prevent it from being marketed as a food or drug. This conclusion runs counter to the common view that one's own use of alcohol is harmless.
The least toxic drug known to humans is now illegal. The most toxic is available at Safeway. None of this makes any sense at all. And yet we continue to imprison people for ingesting substances far less harmful than others freely available. One has to wonder what the prohibitionists are smoking. Maybe nutmeg.

Heroin shuts down your breathing if you take to much, so it's called toxic. When really it's quite safe for the body when used in lower ammounts. Heroin is pretty safe for the body's tissues. Orally and injected.
Many places in Europe still use it in hospitals.

According to that chart, Heroin is the most toxic. I've never seen H for sale at Safeway.
I see many errors in that chart. What/Who determined effective dose? I can get a buzz off one shot of alcohol, but will not die after 10. Effective dose of lsd can be 50 micrograms, 50 milligrams will not kill somebody. etc, etc
I like the idea of the chart, but the numbers seem to be arbitrary.
How was the LD50 of DMT obtained? I've never heard of an overdose death from it.

Exactly. However, look at societal impact and the lengths people go to, to obtain heroin once addicted.
Then there are other issues such as the spread of HIV through needle sharing etc.
This is why the physical safety of a drug isn't always the best measure or indicator of its legal status.

The cut in hard drugs is a major health issue. Pure Heroin, Pure Cocaine, etc are much safer than the shit out on the streets.

Yeah I know 60+ year old people who've smoked most of their whole lives and are pretty damn healthy. Ironically enough every one of them has given up alcohol.

I have been reading up on this as it has hit the news lately and reading peoples responses on web pages.
I am pro-pot and realise it is as harmless as asprin. But I have had months during harvest season where I was smoking ounces a week and I could feel the THC and other chemicals jsut cursing through my veins. I can build up in your system and even though the effect isn't or ever wil lbe lethal...it can make you pretty retarded. Still it sucks that something so benign is illegal and we spend billions on a 'War' to fight it and clogg our legal system and jails with people who smoke it.

Pot certainly can be abused, even water is dangerous in excess. But relatively speaking, pot is very safe (more so than aspirin).

I always figured my eventual demise would be an opiate and benzo overdose, if I had the option. It seems the most humane way, though I want to dose massive amounts of LSD & DMT iv'd the days leading up to it.

While it is next to impossible to overdose from, remember that you're still inhaling smoke. Unless you're vaporizing it, you could have some nasty respiratory problems down the road.

for the same reason crack isnt there. nobody really knows the ld50 because the results are always wildy skewed.
a very tiny ammount can kill you by heart failure, or you can binge for weeks.

Smoking pot can cause bronchitis and asthma, smoking a normal sized joint would give me dangerous angina pectoris every time, and I have two friends who try to quit weed for over a year now, but keep relapsing.
There are many more factors to determine a drug's dangers than just LD50.

For most people perhaps, but not for all.
The danger about graphs like the ones you presented is that it may lull people into a false sense of safety.
To people with certain cardiovascular disorders like myself, pot is more acutely dangerous than heroin, and certain people with seizure disorders when they take psilocybin or LSD are prone to enter "status epilepticus", a rapid succession of seizures which if untreated may leave them brain damaged or dead.
In all of these cases people may die of one regular user dose. In all of these cases even a strong dose of heroin would have no negative effects that come close to the dangers to them inflicted by the so-called "safe drugs" at the other side of the spectrum.
Yes, across the population pot, shrooms and acid have a very good track record. People should realize however that the dangers of drugs to specific people are highly individual in nature, and often defy predictability.
I vaguely know a streetperson who goes stark raving psychotic for weeks on end if he smokes a joint. So he avoids the weed and instead shoots up about a gram of meth a day, and has done so since the 1980s. Probably nobody in this thread (and most certainly not me) would survive a week in his life, but he's stabilized in his shocking habit for about two decades now. Does that mean meth is relatively safe and weed is dangerous? To us, no. To him, yes.
Individual strengths and flaws are everything when it comes to drugs.

This however, is no reason for them to be illegal.
Many people are alergic to penicillin. Doesn't mean that it should be illegal just because a small portion of the population has a bad reaction to it.

I'm for controlled legalization of drugs, meaning that drugs should be legalized and distributed in forms that can be handled by the general public.
Like, cigarettes are legal but liquid nicotine is controlled as a hazmat. Easy-to-use pre-dosed forms to reduce the risk of overdose of accidental ingestion.
It would be downright murderous to make crystalline fentanyl citrate available to the general public, but pre-dosed in tiny sweetener-like pills that can be held under the tongue, crushed up and snorted or cooked up and injected it could be made available to mature adults.
So, I emphasize the dangers, but am in fact in favor of radical legalization of all major drugs.
Being an adult includes the right to expose yourself to calculated risks of acceptable magnitude for your personal enjoyment. Like skydiving or pistol shooting. Using drugs responsibly is one of those acceptable risks, at least in my view.
Imagine that weed and mushrooms were freely and legally available. Oh noes! The horror!
Umm, no. In Holland this is a reality for decades, and it causes no significant problems to society, even arguable benefits to society when compared to repressive regimes.
