sounds good except for the perlite humidification. I was talking with Workman today, and he recommended either daily misting for casings or a cool-mist humidifier. Perlite provides too much humidity and is better suited for cakes.

Hmm, if Workman says so. But I used humidifiers for years before trying perlite. I use the bulk tray method with perlite now. It works great and is a lot less trouble than working with a humidifier. As far as perlite providing too much humidity...that is true if you don't control it. Just adjust your air exchanges and all will go well.As far as Workman...He and Ryche are the Guru's of Shrooms...They know there cultivation for sure!!!

Sorry, but even with the supposed ease of the SOS tek, I can't recomend any type of casing for the beginner. I say fruit the cakes. At least some cakes. Now, I've never really used the SOS (tried similar things I came up with before SOS was an official tek), but it just seems like an extra step for the newbian to screw up. My advice, use perlite, and fruit cakes. You don't have to listen to me. You can listen to everyone who says the SOS is fine for beginners. But ask yourself, How many of them did SOS THEIR first time? Not many. ------------------ -From a registered Mad Scientist "From a certain point of view" -Jedi Master Obiwan Kenobi (also a Mad Scientist tm)

PM me with any cultivation questions.
I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Ok, how about this. Since there is a difference in opinion whether to case or not. Could I fruit cakes and case in the same terrarium? I guess there would be a difference in growing time. Would that be a problem? I think I'll try six cased and six cakes. Let me know what you think of this. Thanks.------------------ We were all delighted, we all just realized, we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one and noble function of the time. Move.

I think you should start with cakes too. I've had some casing disappointments, so I'm getting better with the cakes first. Keep it simple is my second rule. Patience is first. Don't do both in the same terrarium, they need different humidities. ------------------ The glass is half real.

hey yoschie!!!!i'm glad to see that you've made it back safely to the states. too bad we didn't get to meet...but if u're ever back here in london u know my mobile and e-mail!! oh wait i changed my mobile....i'll give that to u later :P anyways, so it's your first time to grow. i used perlite humidification and had no bad results from it. plus, it's easy and cheap. so go for that. why don't you do a trial and error like i did...do half your batch as cakes and half in casing. you won't get as much shrooms like with casing, but cakes are easier to maintain. in regards to your questioan bout putting cakes and casing in the same terrerium...hell why not, i did and nothing went wrong. i really like casing though...i tried SOS tek and the regular take a pan and do 50/50 tek. i got a shiiload of shrooms from the 50/50 tek on a pyrex pan. the sos tek...well the containers i used caused the whole casing to dry out earlier than it was suppose to be. either way u get some shrooms nice to see u back on the board... cheers

I really need to write a tek up but I think you should...- use a rubbermaid style box, about 2 foot by 1.5 foot. - Use 2 inches perlite to 1 to 1.5 inches water - also fill a quart jar with water/h202 and place a fish tank bubbler stone in it, aswell as a fishtank heater (perlite isn't that great at humidifying but the mycelium loves it) - place your cakes directly on the perlite, and place a small kitchen garbage bag over the whole rubbermade works great i think..
