spawing questions

I want to spawn soon, probably in two weeks. I just wanted to know what everyone likes to spawn with.
I can't seem to find rye ( only rye grass seed), I can only find steer manure at the store (I live in a city), Also I don't know where to get any kind of straw.

I tried to spawn using a mixture of 1/3 verm, 2/3 birdseed, and 1/8 cup rye flour. I transfered some cloned mycelium to the birdseed, but now it's contaminated. I wasn't that sterile, I used the oven tek. It was just a half-assed attempt to try and understand what I was doing.
