TiT incubation temp, cold room

incubation room dimentions: approx 6'x7'x7' air temp: mid 50s
will a simple TiT setup get the incubation temp into the mid 70s in these conditions? or will a small heater/radiator be needed to keep the air warmer?
i would just turn the heat (gas) on, but the incubation space is only 1/20 of the entire space - expensive and a total waste to heat the entire space to warm a small area.

if you use my style tub in tub you will be ok...
14 gallon rubbermaid for the top...
and a 18 gallon rubbermaid for the bottom...
use a 200 to 250 watt submersible aquarium heater...
the extra room between the small and large rubbermaids will give you more room for water.
if you have a cold floor...put the incubator up off the floor and this will cut down on heat loss.
I have 5 of these...
I dial mine in to 81 degrees F.

if you can get your hands on a small thermostatically controlled space heater you'd save yourself a lot of poncing about, not to mention the potential fire hazard of jerry-rigged set-up. good luck thermycologist

My TiT incubator is made of 2 identical 10 gal. tubs with a 300w heater in a room that stays at around 60 degrees. I keep the heater (which is LARGE) set at about 80-84 degrees, it works great for me.
Good luck -P.M.-

well, after one night to stabilize, using 2 identical 14 gallon tubs with a 150W aquarium heater set almost to high, this TiT setup keeps the incubation temp around 80 degrees. the temp of the bottom of the inner tub is 84; the temp 2"-3" higher is around 77. this should provide an adequate environment for incubation, despite air temps in the 50s-60s.

so frustrating! . . . after testing this situation, now in actuality, the TiT temp drops from the low 80s to the low 70s overnight. an additional 150W aqua heater will be used and hopefully this will fix the problem. pf inoculation 2 days ago, no signs of growth yet. surely, the fluxuating temps are affecting this. hopefully, the delay in getting the incubation temp right hasn't affected anything too dramatically. too cold seems better than too hot, but mycelial growth needs to be encouraged before contams invade.

Well with cold temps you're not really inviting the contams so like you said colder is better than hotter.

the digital thermometer has a dual readout. one temp is mesured from a sensor on the gauge itself which is sitting on top of the pints. the other is the temp from a sensor at the end of an 18" cord (attached to the gauge), which is currently wrapped up and placed at the bottom of the inner tub. there is a 5-10 degree difference in the 2 temps. will it matter if the bottom of the tub is at 80-85 degrees and the temp above the jars is 70-75 degrees? or will just the bottom being warm keep the entire jar at reasonable temp? really don't wanna put a space heater in this room . . . it is the air temp of 55-65 that is causing this mess. is it summer yet?

That is why I gave up on my tub in tub,it was too hard to keep it at a consistent temperature,if I do build another one in the future I do like the looks of Roadkill's set up there but in the meantime its room temp for me all the way

with 2 150W aqua heaters, the temp on the bottom of the inner tub is about 89 and the temp at the top of the jars is 79. this should be about right. hopefully, it will stay this way for now. day 3 - still no growth in pf pints. honey water is on day 2 and already beginning to show whispy, white threads...

Mounting a computer fan above a hole cut into the lid of the upper tub and running it continuously should circulate enough air to help regulate the temps. Of course you'd have to raise the temp. of your heaters some.
Also I read that putting a wire rack/shelf in & elevating your jars off the bottom helps.
Good Luck, -P.M-

air circulation around and especially inside the incubation tub should be kept to a minimum. air blowing around would increase the chance of contams being swept into the air and into the inc tub. right? the water temp should hold now with 300W heating it. it would have helped if the experiment would have given these results. 'doh!
with the temp at lid level at 80 and the temp of the bottom (basically water temp) at 90 - is this too hot? hesitant to turn the water temp down, because it will probably drop a few degrees overnight with cooler air temps.
