ISP e-mail safe?
    #6698452 - 03/22/07 07:20 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I wanna try out using the e-mail service provided by my ISP instead of one of the free ones...but since that e-mail address is "official", would it be less private?

As far as encryption goes, no. But if you're careful with it, it will be less spammy. Check out third party email encryption programs if you're worried.

Sure, your ISP's email is less safe than yahoo or hotmail, considering that it's signed up to your own name. If you somehow got in trouble for something (assuming the cops didn't get your computer. It doesn't matter how many times you reformat it, they get data off the drive. Even zeroing it isn't perfect), they'll know what your email address with your ISP is. If you leave no trail to a yahoo one, obviously they won't know about it.

Hushmail is the way to go.

Anything you don't want someone to see needs to be encrypted, whether it is e-mail or anything else. I'd suggest picking up gnupg (open source/free software PGP implementation) and using that if you have sensitive things that cannot be relayed a way that is not e-mail.
