you dont have to worry about contaminates with those holes not being stuffed with polyfill?
and do you mist them regularly?
sure is a nice simple method.

Contams aren't a major issue when the substrate is fully colonised anyway, BUT, its even less of an issue when the holes are covered - and this stops the fungus gnats setting in.... Since moving to buckets I have never had a problem with gnats.
In cased you missed it, here is a pic from an uncased bucket of PE6 (clone) -

I really like this idea! I have read through this thread twice and can't seem to find how much initial substrate you had. A quart of WBS?
I'm sorry if I passed over it.

This is really cool. I just colonized to straw in a bread bag. Just a regular old sliced bread bag. I needed something and I just made a sandwich and thought "why not?". It worked fine. I will post pics when the first flush has finished.

Ive never measured it, and we use metric measurements in Oz - just use what you think feels right, you can user as little or as much as you need. I always spawn at a ration of about 40/60, spawn/substrate.

Thank you. I get a thrill trying new stuff. Plus those could sit around a garage and look fairly inconspicuous. I would have never thought to use shower caps. I guess the humidity kind of takes care of itself?

Pretty much mushbaby - I put the odd misting of water in there but you can getaway without it, just depends on the ambient relative humidity and how big your holes are etc, and how much airflow is in your room - I have a fan pointed in their direction that comes on for 15 minutes, 6 times a day and that seems to keep a good balance of FAE/humidity.
You can also squash the shower cap down closer to the substrate and that raises the RH near the surface of the casing a lot.

Hey thanks _OttO_ I do apologise for the n00b comments further back when asking Q's, I've found myself now and sorted it all out
Hey a quick Q though, I also used Concentrated Seaweed extract when moistening the manure, do you use that to spray your casing too, out of curiousity..
I soaked the WBS with 5 tablespoons of instant coffee for 18 hours, then when ready, cased these baddies with a 50/50 Verm/Peat moss with a tiny bit of coco coir.
It seems to be working..

Hey mate, definitely do not spray your casings with anything except water. Your nutrients are already inside the substrate, and spraying them is only done to raise humidity - not to add any more nutrients.

When you're letting the buckets incubate in the dark warm incubator, do you just keep the shower caps on, or do you cover with plastic wrap?

Just the shower cap, pushed down closer to the level of the substrate...
And they just sit in a dark warmish cupboard - no incubator is built for them. I wrap the buckets in a sleeping bag and they produce a lot of their own heat.

My freakin' god...this is the coolest tek ever! Bucket'o'Fungus...oh man I've been thinking of doing a 'minitub' grow, even put up my procedure on the cultivation board for people to look at, but this is exactly what I'm after! And showercaps? Master-stroke!
