Bucket o' fungus - Z strain * 15
    #6696796 - 03/21/07 08:25 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everyone - these are from Z strain multispore, fruiting in the ole' monobucket that's rocking my socks lately.

WBS spawned in the bucket to straw/poo/coir mix, cased with peat/verm/coir -

Total from one bucket -

Dried to 47.2g.

I love it. Fuck a bucket of beers!

Do u just put plastic wrap over the top and neglect?

I used a shower cap - I found a packet of 4 caps for a $1....

I do have a fan in the same room as the bucket/s, blowing kind of over the top of the bucket/s. The fan comes on for 30 mins 6 times a day (on a timer).

Other than that, the very occasional misting - if the surface looked a little dry, but only did that around 4 times in total.

Doesnt get much easier/cheaper than that!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

You should write up a Bucket 'o Fungus tek

I do plan on it - just very busy at the moment... (and a tad lasy)

Its really a great way for the beginner cultivator to go semi bulk, very very very cheaply and hassle free.

Ok, heres some more pics - these are 4 buckets of PE6 (clone) -

And only four buckets yeilded this -

Which dried to just over 6 oz. Crazy...

Shower caps!? ya crafty bastard! If that is what those 4 buckets produced then they can be very beneficial for those with limited space.

Also what is the exact height on those buckets?

They are 10L buckets so around about 30-40 cms tall - but the shower caps are quite loose fitting so the shrooms have room to push up against the cap and keep growing if they have to (which they often do).

EmbreO, are you an Aussie?

Looks fine man, just go to the hardware store and get some cheap 10 Litre buckets (not sure what the measurement would be in gallons - look up a conversion) and give it crack!

Make sure you post some pics when your done.

Looks perfect PatternofChaos - do make sure you include the holes whether its a casing or not, the humidity can be controlled a lot easier than the fae - its better to have things a lot fresher but a tad dry and adding the odd spray from a spray bottle, then it is to have things going stagnant.

What is the diameter of those holes?

How many would you recommend?

Is that just plain ol' micropore tape?

:sun:

The hole is big enough to stick my middle finger through.

I put four holes around the top - and two closer to the substrate level, more or less is up to you - it was purely a guess, Id use more if there was no fan in the room (or bigger holes).

Yes it is just plain old micropore tape.

Here's some pics of the buckets with the shower cap on -

When your substrate is colonising and the casing pinning, you can leave the cap closer to the substrate to increase humidity a bit -

When your fruits are maturing you can pull it up to suck in some fresh air and give them room to mature -

The shower cap acts like a "lung" where by pulling it up or pushing it down you can suck in or expel air through the micropore covered holes, therefore an easy way to fan your buckets if you feel the need to, and the air is also filtered.

Although if you have an electric fan in the room pointing roughly in the direction of the buckets you dont need to do this.

BTW Otto...minutes later I went to the kitchen, turned on the stovetop fan to high, and went to soldering. My girlfriend took the camera today so no pics but I made about 8 3/4" holes or so around perlite level and hydrated a new batch of perlite so my one pitcher doesn't smell like feet. Thinking about doing my other pitcher but I may just let it go so I can compare results. Gyah so torn.

I'd say compare the results - best way to see if what you did was the best option.

Ya Finally got around to posting this.
You got things nice & simplified there, Lazy bugger:poke:
When I get my shit together I'll make a post on my overcomplicated bucket'o'fungus setup.

Those buckets sure do look nice'n'easy.... Tasty too, :drooling:  Z-strain,
Keep the shrooms coming man.

Thanks man, yeah I havent written a full description on how I do these yet but just had to post these pics - I couldnt wait any longer, they are actually quite old now.

And yes, that still is 'the' Z strain...

How did you go about incubating after spawning? I'm interested in this setup but space is limited so likely there would be buckets in various phases in the same room so heating the entire room to 85 wouldn't be good.

I am pretty relaxed about temp lately as its been summer here and temps are nice and warm in the house anyway - I just throw the buckets in a dark cupboard until they're colonised. I then just take them out of the cupboard and in the same room fruit them.

Temps dont need to be exact IME - obviously if they are ideal you get ideal growing conditions, but a little variation (like the cooler night time temps) doesnt hurt anything other than slowing things down a bit.

great job otto.  can you tell us how deep the substrate & casing layers were on this project?

The substrate layer was about 3 inches deep, and the casing layer quite thin - not measured, just eyeballed around about 1/2 - 2/3 inch deep.

Nice pics mate! Good to see you finally posting about your ingeneous bucket tek.

After seeing your success with the buckets last year, I finally decided to give it a go. I got the 80c buckets from bunnings, the $2 4-pack shower caps from coles and $1.80 micropore tape. My first trial bucket is just starting to pin, so hoping for a nice flush.

The conditions inside there are just right. The little buggers are even growing off the sides of the bucket.

So cheap, so easy, so prolific. Have to give you 5 shrooms for the bucket o'fungus otto-tek.:mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Unreal man! Looks great, only thing you may have a problem with is side pinning - the plastic lets through a lot of light.

Buy some black tape from bunnings (about $2 a roll) - and wrap that around the bottom to above the line of your substrate before you start next time.

What did you use for a substrate and casing layer?

Make sure you put up a pic when its complete - looking great so far...!

have to give this one a try

how many flushes did you have?

Usually three flushes is no problem, averaging around 45g on the first flush, 20 on the second and 10-15 on the third - this is strain and environmental dependant though and can vary, but that seems to be a relatively steady average.

I'm totally doing this...I need a simple grow set up because I don't have the time/energy right now to keep up any other way.  I think I've just found my new method.

Question:  It's only spring and my apartment is getting pretty hot right now.  (no AC) I'm worried about the temps being too warm for fruiting so any advice on that?  I was thinking about just using those water-filled icy thingies beneath the bucket.  Or even placing frozen towels around the buckets, I don't know.  What do you guys think?

Sounds like it would work but negates the whole purpose of it being relatively hassle free... Really depends on the temp in the room - as long as its not much above 35C you should be just OK - just keep plenty of FAE and the odd misting.

The substrate was a mix of straw, horse poo, coir and coffee grounds (with a splash of seawead extract to bump up the nutes).

And just use any pasta sauce jars, with metal lids - no need particularly for preserving, or 'canning' jars.

Plan on writing your tek up soon? Ide like to try this for a few of my WBS jars that have now colonized. Nice grow  What was the wet weight on thoes dogs?

Wasn't planning on it, got a bit bummed with how much time the shroomery was taking up from getting other things done - but I may still get around to it, there seems to be a lot of interest. Though, it really is as simple as it looks - mix spawn and compost inside bucket, let colonise - add casing layer and expose to fruiting conditions....

awsome!!!!  i may try this pretty soon myself!  one quick question, and i know its a stupid one.  micropore tape.  is that the waxy paper like tape hospitals use to tap the need to your arm when taking blood?  sorry about that, i just need a good example as no one speaks english where i live

Yeah thats the stuff - it is 'breathable' (hence the name 'micro-pore') and is good to cover the holes with.

That being said, if you can't find it (should be near the bandages and dressings in the chemist) you can just leave the holes on the bucket completely open.
