Peat brands

Can someone recommend a good peat brand, or list their favorite(s)?

I'm looking for something with good consistency, and maybe fewer "sticks"... oh, and easily purchased in the States.

^If you're going to go lazy, at least get Jiffy Mix which is PH balanced and doesn't contain coir, fertilizer, and perlite.

MCMG works, with very good results. If Jiffy Mix works for you, go for it - but a LOT of people have great results with MCMG.

Does one replace the peat moss in the 50/50 tek with MGMC or just use it as a casing by itself?

A lot of people have success with straight verm or coir too. Doesn't mean they're optimal or can do the job the best. 50/50(Jiffy Mix) will outperform Miracle Grow and result in a lower contamination rate from it's correctly balanced PH. And it's cheaper.

For a tiny fraction of the cost of that stuff, you can get real peat. Sunshine brand in the 3 cubic foot blocks will last a long time, because it expands nearly as much as coir when you hydrate it. I've been using the same compressed block for two years now, and it costs about the same as one of those tiny bags of mgmc.

MGMC and Jiffy both look like time-savers, for sure... however, I think just for the learning experience, I'm going to try the standard 50/50+ tek using peat first.

Apparently, Sunshine brand Peat comes in several grades... but I'm assuming THIS is the one that's usually used for mushrooms.

I've used coir and coir/verm with great success... however, it's time to try something different. Thanks for the info everyone!

Ditto on that.
I get big compressed bales, from Lowes - HomeDepot.
One bail last a long long time.
Mgmc price is way out of whack, compared to big bails.
