Which actives are in Thailand?
    #6692011 - 03/20/07 06:09 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Its been a long time since I've visited the shroomery, and I've got to say that its good just to read through the posts again, gives me a kind of satisfaction. Anyways, I'm going on a trip to Thailand to visit a friend next month, and I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I'll be googling and what not right after I post this, but it would be great if anyone has any knowledge of the active species that grow there. I'll be in northern thailand for the most part. Thanks in advance.

Well I tried to look around for some stuff, nothing in-depth though, but I didn't find anything useful, and the only thing I found on shroomery about thailand were trip reports.

I do have one question though. Are there any mushrooms that bruise blue that ARE poisonous? I figure if cubies were growing and I found some, I could just check for bruising to verify that they were active. I just don't want to end up getting some shroom that bruises thats gonna have me end up dead in the middle of the thailand rainforest  :werd: .

I'm definitely going to be taking tons of pictures while I'm there, I just got a new lens for my camera specifically for the trip. I wonder if I could smuggle some thai shrooms back home...

First of all, you probably want to hone in on some cattle pastures- the common potent actives are Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens I believe, but MJ has been to Thailand, so maybe he knows something I do not.

Basically, if it is growing from cow manure or a pasture with lots of manure, and it bruises blue (DISTINCT blue- not "I think that's blue"), then it is an active and safe to eat. I would however, advise you to take spore prints- Ps. cubensis drop purple/brown spores, while Pan. cyanescens drops jet black spores.
Many poisonous Boletes stain blue, though they have spongy material on the underside of the cap rather than gills.
Another Mushroom which might potentially cause confusion is Stropharia aeruginosa, it too has a purple/brown to purple/black print, and the mushroom changes colours from blue to green to yellow as it ages, and it grows in wooded or grassy areas.
Make sure that you observe a colour change! Not just natural colour change of the mushroom over time, but see that the mushroom turns blue where damaged, indicating psilocin.
I'm not even sure if that particular species grows in Thailand, but you should certainly look up the names of these mushrooms on google images, and see what they look like.

Here is an image of S. aeruginosa which resembled much of the characteristics of Psilocybe cubensis, despite colour differences.

WEll fella,

you must have not looked up very much about Thailand. There are five articles posted at the mj shroom world website and they even provide some general locations.

The common Thai species are P. cubensis, P. subcubensis, Copelandia cyaqnescens, Copelandia cambodgeniensis and Psilocybe samuinesis. There are also as yet, three unidentified species which my colleagues and I are writing on.

As for images of cubes, Copes and Psilocybe species, there are thousands of Psilocybe photographs of more than sixty species of Psilocybe posted at this page.

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species.htm.

Including the Thai species noted above.

The articles on Thailand are at:

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/articles.htm

Also a very important factor.

You might not find any at all since the rainy season is from the end of May through October. That is when they grow. Right now there is no rain.

The first May Flushes at the end of the month are humongous.

And also read the articles at the mj shroom site.

Do not forget, that mushrooms are illegal in Thailand.

You can get jail time and/or deported if caught picking them.

And you would be looking in the manure primarily of the Water Buffalo, not in Cattle manure, although they do grow there.

The buffalo in Thailand outnumber the cattle by 10-1.

And one out of every ten buffalo are pink.
So look in buffalo shit.

Samui has a small herd of cattle but again there is no rain right now. But they are common in the buffalo manure more than the cattle.

Here are two varieties of the buffalos you might face.

And beware of buffalos chained to the ground who are fighting buffalos. Never go onto or into an area with just one buffalo. HE might be a fighting buffalo for the buffalo fights which are in the summer months on Samui and other provinces of Thailand. Buffalo fights are a natural sport. But usually a single buffalo on someones property might be a fighting one. So go where there are lots of buffalos.

The buffalo who fight are valuable and will charge a human. They are usually watched day in and day out and moved around by their owners to keep them int he shade and for grazing.

Here are the Buffalos of Thailand and SE Asia.

Thanks for the info guys, and thanks for the website link MJ. It's been awhile since I've done any kind of research on shrooms, and I didn't have any of my old favorite websites bookmarked anymore. I totally forgot about the Mushroom John page, very good stuff. Thanks a lot. And thanks for the tip on the fighting buffalo, don't want to get a horn up my arse:shocked:
