BULLSHIT

Just FYI & IMHO...........
In the past a Racoon I know has wet pasturized STRAW, in a half 55 gallon drum w/water & a gas burner using a wire mesh basket to hold the straw in. That worked well, as it would drain.
In the past that same Racoon has dry pasturized dry horse & cow dung @ 175 -- 180 F., in an oven for 90 -- 120 minutes, then added sterile water to hydrate it to the correct consistancy. That worked well.
That same Racoon just tried the big pot (40 quart) of hot water w/pillow case full of dung (about 30 quarts) at 175 -- 180 F., for 90 minutes, then hung it to drain overnight.
Even after draining 24 hours. The result was a huge -- heavy water ballon like bag of BULLSHIT SOUP, that smelled like it just squirted out of a cows ass, lacking only the stale urine smell of barn yard ammonia.
The reason it may not have drained well -- possibly was the high thread count of the pillow case. That aside. This was my first & last time using a pillow case full of dung in a pot of hot water to pasturize it in. To much BS & hassle.
IMHO, dry pasturization of dung is easy, no drips, little -- or -- no mess, or 60 pound bag of steaming BS to handle.
Just FYI ... & your results may vary. But, I doubt it, unless you use a burlap bag that will drain well. Even then, you still have to handle steaming chunky style BS. Not my prefered method of enjoying myself.
So, I took a drive in the country to get away from the BS smell that lingers in my back yard. Luck must treat the dumb kindly. Way out in the sticks I see a sign -- Dairy Cow Compost (DCC) $18 per cubic yard. I pull in to check it out.
This DCC turns out to be composted to mushroom substrate spec's. Commercial growers buy it by the truck load.
My farming just got easy. No more composting..... no more BS soup, draining straw .... or oven full of dung......................LOL ...................SixTango

Alien,
No "Bullshit" pun intended, but..............................
What isn't SIMPLE about spawning freshly prepared mushroom compost in any size tub (you prefer) with quarts or autoclave bags of colonized rye grain & going on from there? Maybe the Racoon is missing the complex parts? I thought whatever works, is what matters. This works, just not well in a half pint jar.
Lighten up. I was just attemping to save beginners a dripping bag of wet steaming BS soup, if they thought of attempting the dung, pillow case & hot water pasturization thing that some say is da real shitzzzzzzzzzz.

"The harder you work for it the better you will feel in the end because the mush will show your hard work." I guess if I go by this theory I should blow my own glass jars, grind my brown rice with a stone, and chop the wood for the fire for my PC. I'll bet I'd really enjoy those muchrooms.
I always thought it was better to work smart than hard. I'd rather buy my jars, grind my rice in a electric coffee grinder, and put my PC on my electric stove. My shrooms probably not as good as those you worked so hard for.
Thanks for the suggestion Six. Have a great day

Alien Substrate Formula 2/3 cup of quinoa (health food store) 2/3 cup long grain brown rice (grocery store) 2 1/4 cups spring water 1 1/4 cups vermiculite (Wal-Mart) 1/8 cup flax seed (measured before grinding) 1/8 cup finch seed (measured before grinding) 1/8 cup whole grain rye (rye berries) (measured before grinding)
i get bags of nice shrooms off of rye flour and verm, no need to complicate further i aint saying that isnt a wonderful recipe, ive heard a lot of good things about it.... but if you had decided that brf was good enough, you would have never discovered it. same with trying other teks.... it aint about bags of shrooms, its about doing everything you can, to get better with each batch, even if it was a total failure.... ya know, the guy who expierments and fucks up 24 jars monthly, will one day be a better cultivator than the guy who sticks to one tek, and has 24 success's a month

I just learn by imitation...
just follow the guys that know what there doing... and do it..
I find it easier to learn from others success and methods rather then all these teks... The tek were good for measurements and procedure but when It comes down to the way I have my setup and the way I am succeeding I would say it would have to be because of the roadkills, hippies and alien's, etc
Without people like that, this would be a VERY VERY VERY hard hobby to get off the ground with...
And to add I hate playing with shit too, when ya get it it dosent smell all that bad, but the second ya cook and add some friggen water, alacazam..... Smelly shit... Man it smells so bad sometimes my gag reflex starts to kick in.... And I dont even use cow shit I use sheep poop
to each there own... everyone has there own way. but I know personally I learn better by asking questions. Reading alot, but asking more

I guess I should add that on a much smaller scale than 5 or 8 gallons at a time & if the pillow case or whatever type bag one might use to hold horse or cow dung in is porious enough to let it drain properly, that hot water pasturizing dung would be fine. I would assume a burlap bag would drain better than a pillow case.
It just turned into more of a smelly ordeal than I prefer. Part of that was the large amount the Racoon attempted to do at once. So, he is inpart at fault.
The other little surprise the Racoon got was that the dung he used was dry to begin with & didn't smell like fecal matter -- at all -- when dry.
Once stewed a bit in water, it did?
Later that day, the Raccoons women was walking around the house looking all over........... thinking a dog or cat took a dump in the house because of the smell that clung to the Racoons shoes. Because he walked around where the bag dripped & that smell seems to have clung to the bottom of his shoes & spread into the house, because he was stupid enough to have tracked it in.
Just go with whatever works for you, have fun & enjoy the hobby. It takes some patience to get around the learning curve. Once your there, things go better.
Life & shroom cultivation is like a box of chocolates. Your never quite sure what your going to get.
