The tek says flipping jars can be risky....why? I do that to everyone of my jars once there is a quarter inch uncolonized at the bottom. Helps alot and I never had problems with doing so. Im also confused why the extra dry verm at the bottom helps it colonize. I understand that putting it there will eliminate the problem with the bottom taking forever to colonize. But then you dont have as much substrate and after flipping it really only takes a day or so for it to finish.

I obviously don't have any experience to go on yet since I'm only on my first grow, but from watching my jars every day I am starting to think that a light, fluffy substrate (ie. NOT packing it into the jar when filling the jars to PC before innoculation) makes a huge difference. All 10 of my jars are growing very fast and insanely rhizomorphic (just like Sporeworks' site says Mazatapec mycellium would be) and all 10 jars have started to colonize the bottom of the substrates just as fast and far reaching as they have been on the sides of the jar. I only have the dry verm layer on the top of the cakes under the tin foil (not using lids...following Anno's TEK). So I would simply suggest following Anno's advice in the tek about spooning in the substrate mixture lightly/gently and not tapping it down at all. All I did was very gently shake the jar while in my hand to make sure the substrate mixture was even across the top once I had spooned it into the jar. I didn't worry about the dry verm layer on top...just spooned enough in to the top of the jar and covered with the double-foil and top foil layers and popped into the PC. Worked great!
I still can't get over how beautiful an event this is to witness each day. I'm sure I'll be over my newbie factuation by the Fall but til then, I'm still enjoying each step of the process fully.
Love & Light,
Boppity
