Do you mean lay the cakes on top of the perlite. If so you can do that. It is more advised to keep a buffer between the perlite and the cake to keep the cake from over saturation.

Use lid of jars. MG is fine.

Just like the metal lid of a jar will do, or anything that will just keep the cake off of the perlite. I grew in a Poor Mans Terrarium with my cakes right on top of the perlite with no problems, but I'm sure you could even use a piece of sterilized paper or something

Well basically the 2 liter bottles work like this. By eliminating a section of you bottle you can make the space inside more compact. placing perlite and a cake in this you can now trap in the humidity. Though you get pinning all over the cake ( which isn't a bad thing ) and smaller flushes/skinnier mushrooms it is pretty good for the beginner grower because no expensive materials are needed to ensure FAE. Just unscrew the cap and fan it for about 2 minutes a day 2-3 times a day. I'll post the biggest shroom I have ever grown this way.
This is Psilocybe Cubensis B+
Edit: I made the mistake of not having fresh air during incubation so the cake wasn't fully colonized so that might be why my flushes sucked. This one weighed in at 15 grams

probably just case em. All it really takes is some verm and peat moss. You already have the verm and peat moss costs about the same as verm. Just look into some of the casing teks.

The pet store, look in the reptile section. It is sold in bricks and is sold under the brand names bed-a-beast,Eco-earth and there is another common brand but the name eludes me at the moment,I usually get Eco-earth because they usually have it shrink wrapped 3 bricks for 8 dollars as opposed to the 5 bucks a brick that it usually is so I clean all of em off the shelf and stock up

I didn't know this. Why is it in the reptile section, I used to have an iguana as well as a ball python and never used it.

Yea,its easy to get not only nervous but even downright discouraged when your first attempts go bad even when you think you did everything right, hang out here and you will find everything you need, even though you have to actually put it into practice to really learn for yourself,I'm sure allot has changed for the better since the last time you were here, ppl seem to be coming up with new stuff all the time

That is the great thing about the shroomery. It is constantly filled with innovators who either make new teks or make old teks better.

Colonizing jars require gas exchange. If you seal them off, the mycelium will stall and die. RR

i used this guide: http://www.shroomery.org/8411/The-Magic-Mushrooms-Growers-Guide and not once does it mention gas exchange in fact it says "The cake must stay in the jar until the entire surface area is covered with mycelium. As the substrate gets more colonized, the growth slows down. This is a result of CO2 building up and less oxygen being available for the fungus to consume. The cakes can not be taken out of the jars while there is still uncolonized substrate."

klaws, your best bet is to buy polyfill ( from walmart in the fabric section. It is essentially pillow stuffing ) and fill the inoculation holes with polyfill to allow air exchange. Or using filter disks/tyvek instead of a metal lid. Me, I just ran out of filter lids SOOOOOOOO coffee filters for me, I used a coffee filter under the metal band and 2 above it just to make sure since I've never used coffee filters as an improvised filter disk or tyvek.

Take off the tinfoil and replace it with the coffee filters do this fast like as soon as you lift the last layer of tinfoil place down the coffee filter then hold it in place using a rubber band.

the lids need to have inoculation ports, where you injected the spore solution, right. make sure those are uncovered and that your jars are in a well-ventilated, warm location - the lighting of the location is up to you, darkness is not a requirement for p.cubensis colonization.
If the jar's do not have any holes in them... do whatever you feel is necessary but air-tight = failed.

My first jars didn't have any air exchange. Took them about a month to get fully colonized. Maybe a month and a half. Go for the gas exchange now. I would use 2 filters just because better safe than sorry right? You should be alright man.

try to flatten them out. If you want put the little coffee filter hats on the jars and then put a book on top of the jar for a small amount of time just to flatten it out.

By the way, you could clean your bathroom from top to bottom with bleach and it still would be the most contaminated room in your house within an hour of non-use. Half that if it had carpet. The kitchen is the second dirtiest place in your house but because it doesn't have carpet and you don't routinely shit in it, it's slightly cleaner than your bathroom.
Stupid, random trivia you pick up along the way.

kLaWsRauGHt said: hehe.. well ive just got done covering them all with coffee filters.. about 5 had trace amounts of cobweb mold on the top.. all of them wreaked of mushrooms.. im feeling incredibly light headed.. im curious if this could be an affect from inhaling cobweb mold? lol.. also.. are these cakes 100% screwed? or is it possible its just on top? anyone have some good pics of what cobweb mold looks like in a jar..? thanks
I suggest LIGHTLY misting it with H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) to help kill the cobweb mold. And cobweb looks a bit like pillow stuffing. Mycelium is a straight white while cobweb looks a bit gray.
