I changed my mind about Vista

I think it's a really refreshing OS so far
I really like the gadgets on the right

I haven't run into any of these "drm issues"
I disabled the UAC thing, though
Why is this OS getting trashed, it seems pretty solid to me

But it was a bitch to put ubuntu on the same hard drive...
I've never seen an issue with resizing the windows partition to add another partition while installing Linux. It just wouldn't let me do it. I had to manually change it via Acronis disk director, and I had nothing but problems trying to shrink the drive.
I wound up with 2 equal partitions, but there was disk read errors upon booting..I had to reinstall Vista on one partition and delete the other (leaving it as unformatted free space)
Then I had to install linux on the "largest continuous free space"
It was quite a headache for some reason

On vista, is there an option to change the setup back to 'classic windows style'
You know, with a grey task bar, plain start button and plain start menu?
Also, could i get rid of those gadgets on the side? <g>

But then we wouldn't need for you to upgrade to at least 1G of RAM, and 128M of video memory, now would we?

The gadgets stay on the bottom layer anyway, so they don't interfere with any open applications. I haven't played around with the themes too much, but I assume you could always go "Windows Classic"
but then again...from the limited exposure I've had to Vista, it seems like it's Windows XP with tighter (more annoying) security.
Also, I had my XP looking almost identical to this last year, with WindowBlinds.
But it's not like casual users (or schools or businesses) will be switching to Linux any time soon, so ya might as well get used to MS for those applications.
That being said, I'm in ubuntu right now, just because I feel better about using an OS that encourages me to copy discs and spread it around. Plus I'm nervous waiting for some crazy new MS anti-piracy program that silently tells someone that my computer is using a pirated copy of Vista, and me being slapped with a criminal charge
I'm high and that seems plausible to me right now

Installing Ubuntu and Vista wasn't too hard. What boot manager are you using? It was pretty simple with GRUB, you just have to edit one config file.

> But it's not like casual users (or schools or businesses) will be switching to Linux any time soon
I disagree. Linux is finally maturing to the point where it is becoming easy to use for 'non-geeks'. Since the Vista garbage has been released, I have had a lot of 'common' people asking about Linux. This is up from ZERO people asking about Linux before the Vista garbage was released.
Don't take my first hand experience... Dell put up a suggestion box on their web site. In three weeks they had over 100,000 requests (the #1 item) to release new Dell computers with Linux rather than Vista and the #2 item (no numbers released) was for open office rather than MS office.
Finally, Windows is pretty much pointless without office... and Google is making strong inroads into the office market with their online office suite. Microsoft has started to quietly attack google. Just recently, MS testified against Google, saying that Google promotes violations of the DMCA and is a bad, bad company. Very similar to the attacks Microsoft uses against open-source.
Vista is a sneaky bitch. There are some truly evil consequences to open-source software initiatives embedded within the Vista paradigm. Although not much has been said, Microsoft is trying to rid open-source projects of vendor support at the device level, all in the name of DRM, of course. Not anticompetitive, monopolist practices... oh no, not that. The gaming market, along with DX-10, are the vehicles MS is using at the software level and the "vista compatible" stamp of approval at the hardware level.
Thank Flying Spaghetti Monster that the EU refuses to bow down and lick Microsoft's monopolistic feet. I honestly think Microsoft is going to have a rough time in the future. Their monopoly is slowly being eroded, or has the potential to slowly be eroded, and they do not have the ability to compete effectively on an even playing field.

Vista is fucking gay. I have yet to find a single piece of compatible hardware and for some reason my laptop (Gateway) refuses to acknowlege the existance of my CD/DVD drive. I've only had the thing 3 weeks and im just about ready to dropkick it.

I bought Vista Home Premium, and would agree that it is an aesthetically refreshing OS, though I already have ran into DRM issues. I have a high end All-In-Wonder card that was allegedly Vista Ready, but there is no TV tuner support for the card. ATI claims to be working on a solution, but after some investigating I'm very skeptical that one will ever surface up. Basically the card uses a software encoder for the TV tuner, and that doesn't fly with the DRM. So an additional $120 and a TV Wonder 650 later, Media Center's TV options work as intended, though obviously it leaves me wishing that I had invested in a more heavy duty 3D card rather than a lemon All-In-Wonder functioning only as a 3D card. Another disappointment was that I really was looking forward to ATI's new Digital Cable tuner, but apparently will at least not initally be availbe to people who build their own systems, but rather an additional option for major computer manufacturers.... If your cable company supports it, they will be the ones who actually provide and come out and install the tuner. /sigh

Yeah me too. My VAIO crapped out on me and my dad decided to buy a new computer, one with Vista Home Premium on it and so far so good. I'm still learning the various intricacies but I'm enjoying the installation of all my old crap.

All my antivirus, firefox, antispyware, and torrent files installed properly, as did my printer and other peripherals. Most seem to Vista capable now, and usually have a Vista patch available on their sites.

What about Nero?
I got Nero to work once, then after that it would crash every time I tried to burn anything.

Haven't tried burning yet, but the software runs great. Pull a copy from Demonoid, get the newest Premium version. The see-thru paneling looks awesome with this program
