Tyrone Brown Free After Serving 17 Years of Life Sentence; Pardoned by Governor by Brooks Egerton, Dallas Morning News (15 Mar, 2007)
Relentless pressure from friends and family and the support of anti-prohibition groups helped free one of the Drug War's most outrageously-sentenced prisoners
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Tyrone Brown walked out of prison Thursday morning, 17 years after a single positive marijuana test while on probation led a Dallas judge to hit him with a life sentence. Brown, who won a conditional pardon last week from Gov. Rick Perry, broke into a wide smile and then cried as he saw the crowd that awaited him: half a church busload of relatives, plus journalists from as far away as New York. "I didn't believe this day was going to come," he said.
His mother, Nora Brown, rushed across the street to embrace her son and nearly collapsed, speechless. She then led the crowd in waving goodbye to the high red brick walls and razor wire of the Huntsville unit, where Brown had been processed out of the prison system. She screamed "new life" as she later led the group in prayer.
Brown was 17, poor and had no criminal record when Judge Keith Dean initially put him on probation in 1990, for taking part in an armed robbery in which no one was hurt.
The life sentence that followed attracted national attention last year when The Dallas Morning News contrasted it with another from the same judge's court Ð one in which a well-connected man got probation for murder and, despite several positive tests for cocaine and other violations, still avoided prison.
ABC-TV's 20/20 news show later featured the same material, leading to formation of a Web-based campaign to free Brown. Dallas County officials and the Texas parole board recommended that his sentence be terminated. So did the man Brown robbed of $2.
Perry agreed to release Brown, but with conditions. Among other things, Brown must report to a parole officer for an indefinite period and get counseling about his re-entry to society.

Glad that he's free, but they should do something about that lost 17 years. And also probably fire that psycho judge. Thanks for posting this, I had forgotten about this case entirely (17 years is a long fucking time).

The judge and jury should be executed for crimes against humanity. Look what they did to Leary; 30 years for possession.

I was wondering when someone would bring this up. You realize that he had served/was serving (probation) his punishment for that crime, right? Sentencing him to life in prison for probation violation is insane. Hell, sentencing him to life in prison for the original offense would be insane. You also have to consider the kids age. He was only 17 and still legally a minor.
So again, not sure how you think life in prison for either smoking a joint OR robbery (where no one was even injured) would be reasonable.

How? He was unjustly imprisoned for SEVENTEEN YEARS for something as simple as smoking a joint. That is WRONG, no matter who it happens to.

People who commit armed robberies should be removed from society. My compassion is for whomever it was he robbed. That shit is fucking scary. On the other hand, it shows how insane this country is that he would get all that time for the weed VOP. I believe that violent people should be encouraged to smoke pot.

Did you 2 read the whole thing? He was 17!!. And he was sent to jail while on probation for failing a drug test. Even the guy that he robbed wanted him free! Have some compassion and wisdom guys, come on. The world isn't so simple and clear cut, people can do bad things and still become good people.
And yes, I have been robbed, my home was broken in months ago, it really sucked.
This guy stole 2$!, 17 years ago, think about that awhile.

change is the only unchanging law of the universe and everyone has the capacity to change. unconditional love for the world and everyone in it and forgiveness, for my self and everyone else is what i discovered in jail, and i have done alot of things i am not proud of but punishing yourself, holding a grudge, and making harsh judgments can only hurt yourself, noone else.
sorry about that hippie moment

stereotypes and active racism are 2 completely different things, i personally am in no way shape or for prejiduce against any one, but i sure as hell think stereotypes are hilarious and i am not afraid to poke fun at them for shits and giggles, its when you take these stereotypes a step further and use them to hurt or degrade a specific person, or really believe that thats the way the world really is, that is racism.

All I have to say is I hope the people who've robbed other people die a painful and slow death. I once got my car stolen. They gave it back at a rehab center. But guess what? I lost my job, my apartment, etc, because I couldn't get anywhere.
Fuck thieves. I sympathize for potsmokers and other users who get caught, but thieves affect other people. They deserve life. Fuck 'em.

I just don't like thieves. I would have murdered the person who took my car, that's how I honestly feel. *shrug*
*edit* Also, there's a difference between robbing a bank and shoplifting tomatoes from a supermarket. A big visible glowing line of a difference.

And to that point, armed robbery. When you've got a gun shoved in your face and you're told to put the money in the bag or your brains are gonna be on the wall, even if you live through it, you're gonna also feel like that person deserves life in prison.

considering the kids age... at 17 I was more than capable of knowing right from wrong, I knew armed robbery was illegal, surely tyrone did as well, I was poor just as he was yet I didnt rob anyone, what I chose to do was get a job and become a productive member of society, at the times I was on probation or parole I new that getting stoned could lead to me being revoked and a lengthy prison term.
if brown was to stupid to realize all this after they'd given him a chance, then he did in fact deserve the time he served

agreed, I did, I admitted to it when I was asked and never did it again until I was off probation
of course I wasnt working my way into a job as a career criminal either, since we dont know if tyrone brown was in a gang, or if it was just the first time he was caught we dont know the details of why the judge gave him a life sentance

Well it seems as if he got a rather harsh sentence for a minor crime (smoking Marijuana) and got a very light sentence for ARMED ROBBERY, so I guess everything is balanced. Give me a fucking break, is ARMED ROBBERY alright as long as nobody gets hurt?!

I'll say it again. If you think it is "justice" to send someone to prison for LIFE for even armed robbery at age 17 where no one was hurt.. then I have nothing to say to you because your whole world if way off-kilter from mine. Also, congratulations to all the assholes out there who are doing all they can to diminish and de-humanize this guy so they can comfortably sit back and scream for blood.

Is armed robbery over $2 worth life in prison when even the victim is petitioning for the criminal's release? Clearly it's an infringement upon the rights of others, but all sentences should be in moderation. The United States is supposed to be different from Stalinist Russia where you get sent to 20 years in the Gulags for relatively minor deviations, yet in this case he got life in prison for violating his probation once. Other people violate their probations multiple times and the probation officer will just adjust the probation to include more frequent drug tests or up the level of supervision, but this insane judge gives the man life in prison for his first violation! If you actually support such a sentence, I'd like to see you get this judge for a one-time fuck-up.
