NEED HELP QUICK!!!!! ;(
    #667882 - 06/07/02 05:31 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

ok, i know that i have to pre-cook rye grain before putting it into jars then in the pressure cooker because the grain expands and if i dont pre cook, it will make the jar way too packed and tight

but..... is this the same with bird seed and or millett? do i have to pre cook either for this reason? thanks

don't i ALWAYS need a layer of verm on top though to keep any bacteria from getting in ?

also, rye grain, its just damp rye grain, right no verm with it, just damp rye grain and verm at the top? what if i use verm mixed with the rye grain? will that work also and or better thanks

Then you will need to pre-cook. Grain swells during sterilisation, effectively its being cooked.

Hope that helps

Good luck with your experiments.

unless your making a cake i wouldn,t put verm as a top layer you really dont need it at all. are you usin micro filters??? verm is a precaution but in all my time doing rye grain iv never gone wrong with just the rye, if you are just using rye to make a cake you should rethink your plan. rye grain doesnt absorb water like vermiculite. so when the cake dries out its dead. the rye grain wont just get all its moister from the humitity in your setup. thats why cakes not only have nutrients(which rye grain has a shit load of) but also has water retainers such as vermiculite and peatmoss????hope that helps good luck

1 jar verm/millett 1 jar perlite/millett 1 jar millett (just verm on top)
1 jar vem/brf 1 jar perlite/brf
1 jar verm/bird seed 1 jar perlite/birdseed
