Hericium, The Lion's Mane on pf cakes

They do pretty darn well on pf cakes from a B.E. standpoint, with the fruits growing about twice the size of the cakes themselves, but in my experience you'll get far more product for your effort from larger, supplemented sawdust/woodchip blocks. The pf cakes make an excellent spawn for bulk though, and straw logs also perform well for Lion's Mane, giving those without a pressure cooker an easy edible to grow.
If you decide to use pf cakes for fruiting, you might want to do them in the open air, or better yet a mini-greenhouse with good air exchange. Note that even with all the holes drilled into this terrarium, the fruits inside are scraggly and airy due to the extreme intolerance of hericium for high CO2 levels, but the one you see poking out through the 1/4" vent hole into the open air has the perfect pom-pom shape. open air? no fc? thats how i did my oysters how often should i mist them in open air? thanks for making this post i have a lions mane kit coming in the mail that my brother ordered for me for my birthday (would have preferred a syringe, but hey) and i would really like to try it on pf cakes i dont know alot about this species but they seem to not have a regular stipe, if i want to take a tissue sample where would i take it from? or do you think there is a better way to stretch the kit out?

They're growing on pf cakes. The dark stuff is vermiculite. I always dunk and roll after birthing.
Yes, they grow on straw logs. My last one, um. . .got dropped as I was moving it to take the picture, so no dice. Next time. In fact, they've grown on every substrate I've tried them on so far. Coir, straw, sawdust, wood dowels, hardwood chips, and a phone book. Oh yea, pf cakes. The only thing I haven't tried them on is horse manure, but something tells me they'd grow on that too. RR

hey this may seem a little off topic but i was wondering did you write a manual or book on "growing mushrooms the easy way" using peroxide? or on non sterile cultivation? im just wondering because i found this manual online and his initials are r.r. same person? plus, picture has some resemblance to the pic here...minus some facial hair http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6214514
