Will substrate contam if not allowed to breath?

I just spawned some milet to a batch of straw. I don't cut the straw up but I weigh it down with weight on top of a piece of a light diffuser(the plastic that goes on florescent fixtures) and it is too btittle to drill holes in and was wondering if the straw will contam in the stagnet air. I am guessing it will take longer to colonize.

I was going to ask this question also. All 4 of my straw trays have been comtaminated by the green mold. When I dump them, I found that the green is all over the middle and the bottom of the trays, and it's real wet in there. So my assumption is that it got contaminated because I didn't fully strain the straw. But I also don't poke holes in the saran wrap during the spawn run, and was wondering if stale air could also contributed to the green mold problem?

How wet was your substrate? Were their pools of water? Also, i just read that if you use alot of spawn you increase the risk of contam because the spawn is at about mid-life.

I left the straw to dry in the pillow case for about an hour, thinking it would be sufficently dried. When I dumped it, it was sopping wet in the middle.
I didn't use too much spawn, just a quart for a 1 foot square plastic bin that was about 4 inches deep.

I have read that high humidity and stagnant air cause contams. My casings usually have water condensing on the sides of the container, but this is the first time I have put a piece of plexiglass on top of my substrate. I usually use som chicken wire wired to four plastic dowel rods that form a (#). these rusted and now im trying the plastic.
