I am quite capable of doing this myself.
I just hate how I'll be walking along, deep in thought, and then I realize someone 10 feet ahead of me has stopped and is holding the door open for me, then I feel the need to hurry up and grab it.
WTF?
What is the purpose of this ritual?
I will hold the door open for an old person, or a pretty girl. But I am 24, obviously have the use of all my limbs, and am not a girl.
I can open the door!!!

I usually open doors for people if they are within a reasonable distance from the door, regardless of how old they are or what sex they are. Nothing wrong with a little courtesy now and again.

Next time it will be the other way someone is going to close it on your nose and it will make it bleed. then your thread will be about no manners of courtesy on people.

Yeah, this is in the midwest, so....
Wisconsinites have EXTREMELY good manners, even in their biggest city.
Its very strange coming from Chicago. People will let you merge into traffic, they hold doors open, and they dont talk on their cell-phone in the library.

On college campuses if you don't hold the door you are the biggest fucking asshole in the world.
But yes, it has to be a reasonable distance, like, if you are the door holder you should only have to slow down a step or two in order for it to be open enough for the person behind you. Otherwise, just keep walking, maybe give it an extra little push so it looks like you put in an effort.
